Would you hire instead of buying?

Mrs P 2 B, 16 August, 2013 at 20:41 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi ladies, I'm thinking of starting my own wedding hire business for decorations, such as wicker hearts, buntings, candleabras, crystal tea light holders, sweetie buffet jars, just married sign, bird cage for cards etc.

i would plan to keep my prices quite low as these are items we had for our own wedding and would offer free delivery within 10miles of my home.

my question is would you hire instead of buying?

i have attached some pics I have on iPad.

i hope this is not breaking any rules!!

I would hire, yes, but everything I looked to hire was 50% or more than the purchase price, so I ended up buying and then selling on instead. That's my experience Smiley smile

Certain things i'd buy if I wanted to keep & reuse but things like sweetie jars, bird cages etc I would definitely hire as they'd either be left going dusty in the loft or being sold on so would save that hassle Smiley smile

I would hire, if it made financial sense - I've seen some expensive hire prices (compared to the purchase price) for a few things, so would probably buy and re-sell, or give to some who might use them...

We hired, but our table runners would have cost is a lot more to make ourselves, as would the bunting.

We hired our flower jugs for £6 each, you can buy them for around £12 so wish we did that but we weren't 100% we would be able to sell them and just ended up hiring.

I would hire but as others have said only if it makes financial sense. The vases i looked at hiring were more expensive than buying and I will either give away with the flowers at the end of the eve or sell on after and make a bit back.

I think people are more inclined to hire things that are hard to get hold of or would be very expensive to buy.

Yeah I agree some people's hire prices are silly!! I was thinking around £5 for the candleabras (without candles). Just married sign £3, 100 tea light holders for £20 which are crystal, bunting £3-10 depending on length, bird cage £4.

I think I would have to do a minnimum order of £20 to cover the free delivery. Plus a deposit returnable after items are received back.

What do these prices sound like?

I might hire but of course it would depend on what I could re-use or sell on afterwards. If I was having a much bigger wedding and needed larger numbers of everything then I would definitely consider it for the more expensive stuff.

    I would.

My friend had a barn which she needed to completely dress herself. She hired almost all the things that went in it like chairs, storm lanterns for the isle, chandelier etc. worked out really cheap for her.

    Your prices sound fair :-)

i have hired bird cages and fish bowls for sweets as I can't afford to buy them all let alone keep them after the wedding. Bits and prices I have bought such as wicker hearts bunting etc I will reuse at home etc so those bits people are more inclined to buy.

Some things I would definitely hire, but others I would want to keep for myself, like I would want to keep a just married sign and little things like that! But your prices sound very fair!
