Would you like earrings for a favour?

Lynseys Designs, 1 March, 2009 at 20:01 Posted on Planning 0 34

I don't want to actually buy ready made favours and want to put my jewellery talents into it but obviously can't spend loads of time on each piece so I thought about giving everyone pearl stud earrings .

Would you like them or think they were too old fashioned? I'm also doing wine charm rings but just like the earring idea as they would be quite different to any other weddings I've been to.

I would go away from the jewellery idea as many people will only wear white/yellow gold if they are sensitive to metals. I think wine charms are a good idea

I don't have my ears pierced anymore, so would be a bit useless for me TBH x

    Nice idea though x

I'd be rather bemused to receive earrings as a favour to be honest. I don't think I'd like it.

I don't have my ears pierced either so it would be wasted on me. I've had jewellery designers make keyrings before using the same stones as the bridesmaids jewellery and with little silver butterflies on. They cost me £1.25 each so should be cheap enough to make and then I put them into organza bags. People loved them.

Thanks girls, I'll give the idea some more thought.

I know all the women coming have pierced ears and apart from a few everyone wears silver earrings and making some in gold isn't a problem but it might just be a waste of time and money still. I'll keep thinking as I'm not 100% sure on the idea myself.

Its not something I would want tbh. My ears are pierced but whatever I wear causes me problems so I don't bother any more. Earrings are a bit too personal I think and I'm not sure how they fit in as wedding favours.

Personally, i would LOVE it! I love earrings and i love pearls- winner! I would also think it was very different and unusual and that it reflected the fact that the bride was a jewellery maker- so a very personal favour!

Ck the keyrings that I did for your bm's take too long to make when I'd have round 40 to make for just day guests. Good idea but time wise for the designs I like they wouold drive me insane.

Thanks weedance and ooh la la.

I'll see what other responses I get and sleep on the idea over night.

I'm not bothered about them not being weddingy as I don't see how heaps of favours like tablet, chocolates etc are weddingy either so it's more the personal thing I like.

Oh yes, thats very true ?

Sorry PG, wasn't thinking straight there was I?

ps I undestand what you say about chocs etc not being weddingy either and I completely agree. Favours are nice sometimes but generally somewhat superfluous. Of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't have them if you wanted too.

Personally I would love them, think they would be a really nice touch and something I would prefer over, say, a bag of sugared almonds (for arguments sake). Plus pearl earrings in particular have come back recently and you can put a modern twist on them so they're definitely not old fashioned in my opinion.

Hmmm i'm not sure. i love earrings, and i would maybe wear pearl studs, and i get the relevance, but i still think i would be a bit bemused at getting them as a favour?

(h2b says to say he probably wouldn't appreciate them as much.... ?)

I'd love to get them as a favour, especially knowing the bride makes jewellery. Seems more personal that way. And anyway Lyns...you know I love pretty sparkly things!?

Although, practically speaking, I'm not sure how it'd go down. Alot of people are allergic to metals other than gold, and I also know a few people who are funny about pearls. But that may just be the people I know!?

As for any other ideas for what you could do, I'm afraid I'm no use at all, what with me having no imagination fr this kind of thing at all!

Really appreciate all the responses thanks.

I'm not concerned by people being allergic to the metals as I know the people that can and can't wear certain things so I would adapt where necessary between silver and 9ct gold.

Favours are one of those things that some people will appreciate and some won't so it's trying to get a balance of more people liking them than not. Favours in my opinion are a total waste but my mum wants me to have them!

Sorry I wouldn't particularly like pearl earrings, jewellery is a bit personal I think - you however know your guests.

I would however like the wine glass charms.

Unfortunately, not for me either as I've never had my ears pierced and can't wear clip ons either because they hurt my ears too much so although they look really pretty, they would be wasted on me too.

I would also love to get pearl earrings! ?

It would seem a strange wedding favour and I'd wonder about the quality of the earrings from anyone else, but knowing that you are a very talented jewellery maker, then I'd be delighted!

I made swarovski crystal teardrop earrings for all the ladies at my wedding (took me bleedin ages!) and they went down a storm and had so many of the ladies come up to me and thank me and even some wore them for the evening do! I would say go for it. I think if you are handmaking them also it gives a personal touch. The men had scratchcards.

Kerry I'm glad you replied because I was going to email to ask you as I knew you had made them before. I thought maybe studs would be better than drop earrings as I know a few of my friends like earrings but nothing dangly.

Did you make them all the same?

I don't have pierced ears, but as you know that all the ladies do - that's ok! Personally I see a lot of pearl earrings at work, and I think they're really classic and pretty. Also they would work for all ages. Pearls are one of my favourite gems, and they're really quite in at the moment.

    I'd say go for it!

I made most of them just a small crystal teardrop but for the under fifteens (had a few) I did small crystal butterflies. I attached a little label which said "handmade by the bride". I think anything like crystals or pearls never really go out of fashion and are pretty classic. I'm really glad I did it.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I'm inclined to make them now because I know my guests and what they like and think most people would really like earrings. Most have been bought jewellery over the years as a birthday or Christmas present so apart from a couple no one will have a problem with the metal. They wouldn't be confused as they all know what I do so will understand the reason behind them and I'll have a tag saying 'handmade by the bride' like Kerry suggested.

I feel that favours will always be left by some anyway so trying to please everyone will never happen but this way the favour actually means something and there is a personal reason behind it.

So now I just need to start making everything which may take me the next 12 weeks!

    Lxx

Well....you know me and pearls! ? but I would love them! And if you know that all your guests have pierced ears then why not! They are a classic design so would suit all ages IMHO!

    Go for it Smiley smile
