Would you risk it ? - Best before dates

niche79, 6 October, 2010 at 15:49 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi all,

I am planning on having a sweetie buffet and would like to have quality street on it as they co-ordinate with my colours.

I was going to get them in the run up to Christmas as the big tins are all on offer but when I went to Sainsburys at lunch time the longest Best Before Date was end June 2011.

My wedding is 4th June 2011, so would you guys risk that date and presume the sweets would be ok or would you buy them nearer the time ?

If they were on offer and a bargain id get them now.

Sweets dont REALLY go off. Your not gona make anyone ill and the BBD is end of June

If there not on offer i would wait, just due to the fact i wouldnt be able to stop scoffing them!

If they are on offer, I'd get them. Chocolate does go a funny whitish colour when over the sell by dates, but we are talking past the sell by dates by a way, and not before or immediately after. I really wouldn't worry!

Best Before, just means that after the end of June the sweets may not be the quality which the seller should sell them at.

As long at you keep them somewhere cool, then I'd get it. Remember that all the big supermarkets will probably do their 2 for £5 deal nearer the festive season.

N.B They are 2 for £12 in Sainsburys at the moment, but if you go to Asda they are 2 for £10!!

Chocolate never gets a chance to reach its best before date when I'm around...

I'd say it wasn't an issue personally - although if the offer is on for a while you might well find it better to leave it a month or so just to get the extra peace of mind.

    om nom nom.

I'd wait until the 2 weeks before Xmas when it will still be £5 for the huge boxes - they might have another 2 months on the sell by date which would be fine.

I think as long as they are kept in a cool place they should be just fine.

ETA: I have heard that Morrisons are doing them for £4.69 atm too.. so you could buy single numbers if you didn't want 2 boxes

Also - might be worth mentioning this to Tesco etc - sure they would be happy to provide the longest date box they have (they do a last in first out policy so there will be stock with longer dates in the warehouse almost certainly) - I was thinking the same and the ones I picked up in Tesco this weekend had until end of July 2011.

I agree with Kayl. Supermarkets generally do these deals right up until Christmas time, so i'd wait til then.

I wouldn't risk it myself, but not because of the dates. More because I'd clearly scoff the lot before the wedding! Chocolate doesn't hang around my house long.

Right BB dates are purely advisory for quality and the chocolates will be fine so long as you don't put them somewhere warm. Buy them now as this is the month that everyone has the special deal on them they will not be this price nearer xmas. Morrisons have the large tins of all chocolate assortments at under a fiver at the moment.

Thanks guys, I was thinking they would only be on offer for a few weeks but if they will still be on in a few months I will wait until nearer Christmas.

WEES - the choc will be fine as long as you keep it somewhere cool (and somewhere out of the way so you can't eat it!)

Personally I'd get it now while it's on offer. The best before is for a time after your wedding anyway, so there really won't be any issue with the quality of the product ( which is all a BB is there to protect). If you wait, the offer may end in which case you're probably as well waiting until a couple of weeks before your wedding so you don't have boxes of choccie cluttering up your house for no real reason.

I think if they go white it's because they have been melted, as the fat rises to the top of the choccy, hence the whiter colour?

Best before June 2011 would be fine, if you bought them with that date in May you would expect them to still ok for June!

It's the Use By dates that you have to look out for, that is normally a bad thing as the item in question may have gone off, however Best Before is just a guarantee that the item will be top quality before that date.

Having said that, these offers are normally on even after Christmas so that they can get rid of their backlog...

Do you have a benefits department at work - I manage ours and as employees we get corporate discounts at most of the major supermarkets ranging from 4-6% discount which would make it even cheaper or negate having to wait for offers?

Hey, I'm getting married on the same date and bought these last week....kinda figure for the price, I'm just going to do it. I'll test them (!!) the week before and if they're white, then I will replace them and swallow the cost but if not, then I get them for a good price ?

I would say wait until the run up to Easter - I am sure they usually have smiliar offers on then and you will be less likely to end up with white chocolates!

That's like most standard wedding chocolate favours anyway. The suppliers buy them in bulk and have them standing around for ages and palm them off on poor brides.

This is a very nice idea! Just make sure that all foods are fresh. The expiration date found on most packaged food is there for a good reason. But that reason may not be exactly what you think it is.

??? this woman has been married for 3 years im guessing

best before - is advisory to check quality

sell by - is the legal obligation for the shop to have sold or removed by

use by - is the only date that matters and even then with certain food a little bit over doesn't effect it (just dont risk animal products)
