would you set a place for a 6 week baby?

knitting_vixen, 18 August, 2011 at 11:48 Posted on Planning 0 12

We have someone coming who will be bringing her (what will then be) a 6-week-old baby.

The baby will be too small to eat obvs, and too small to have a chair or anything... should I include them in the table plan and do them a name card? I don't think it necessary, but I don't want to offend the baby's parents!

We are for the couple of small babies that we're having along.

I also have a friend bringing her guide dog - so Ella has her own place too, complete with some doggy treat favours done up in the organza just like the human ones Smiley smile

I wouldn't no. Presumably the baby will either be in the pram/pushchair or in their parents arms.

Wouldn't the baby need a space round a table for the pushchair though? If you've got a table of 12, for example, then 12 plus baby is too many to fit?

Even if they aren't physically eating anything and don't need a full place laid, surely you need to make room?

I wouldn't be squishing that many people on one table so wouldn't need to make sure there was extra room. The pram/pushchair won't be pulled into the table as a guests chair would.

I would, but without a chair so there is space for a pram to go up to the table otherwise there will be no where for the baby to be put once the parents are eating iyswim?

I had a 15 week old niece who sat in a bouncy chair throughout the meal so I made sure my sister's table was at the edge of the room and put them out of the way as such so the related paraphenalia wouldn't get in anyone's way and my sister wouldn't have to spend the meal moving a pram etc.

But if space is limited between tables the pram is then potentially in people's way for moving around?

I've always seen people with babies sat on a table where that wouldn't be an issue. Usually between the 2 parents but not right up to the table. So that the pram/pushchair was sticking out a bit. They were usually sat at a side table somewhere. If the tables aren't very tight for space in the first place, it should be easy enough to leave a little room for that. I wouldn't set a place for them though.

We have got two babies in pushchairs - both at the same table. I made sure that although the table seats 10, I would allow extra room for the pushchairs. there are actually only 4 adults, 2 toddlers and the 2 babies in their pushchairs/prams. The table is also one nearest to the wall so there should be sufficient room for all.

with regard to the OP. the babies names are included on the table plan, but we're not doing place names for anyone, I'm not particularly bothered about where people actually sit around the table, so we didn't have that problem.

I wouldn't, no. I took C to a wedding when he was a tiny baby, and just shoved him under the table in his car seat*...

*Joking, obviously. I put him behind my chair in his pram, as the B&G seated us somewhere that I was able to put the pram out of the way of everyone else, but still be near me.

Definately agree about putting them to the side to allow for more space.

I ended up squeezing more tables in so that there was more space around each table which meant limited moving around space. Therefore included all babies / children as a "person" on the tables and put them on the tableplan. I wouldn't/didn't set it up as though there was an adult at the place though (cutlery etc), just left an open space if that makes sense?!

This was a table set up for a highchair rather than a pram but the principle was the same, just no cutlery at the place setting:

So there was just a gap ready for the highchair / pram.

My oh's brother got married in may and our little boy was 3 months old ... they didn't have a table plan but they did do a place card for little one which we* kept because it was the first thing other than his birth certificate that had his name on Smiley smile The venue did put a high chair out for him and quickly moved it when they realised there was no way he was going in it lol.

    *I say we ... I mean I OH thinks I'm daft!
