Wrap it - beware

Laura_Lee, 24 July, 2008 at 21:01 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hello ladies - has anyone heard anything dodgy about wrap it? Heard today from a friend of an employee there that they are not paying their vendors and telling brides that the reason they haven't received their gifts is due to flooding in the warehouse ..which is a big fat fib.

Found this too, doesn't sound too good - https://www.theguardian.com/money/2008/may/31/planningyourwedding.consumeraffairs

I haven't even starting thinking about registering a gift list yet as the wedding is still a year away and wasn't planning on using it myself but thought I should pass on, better safe than sorry I guess.... Laura.

A bloke posted on here a couple of months ago with a link to his blog all about his problems with Wrap It. Sounded like a nightmare. We avoided them when we registered.

This is really wierd because I was listening to Steve Wright on Radio 2 this afternoon and on the 4 o'clock news it was reported that Wrapit had gone into receivership.

We were all chatting as we were icing cakes this afternoon and only heard the end of it and something about only people who have already done something (sorry we didn't cath the details) would actually receive their wedding gifts.

About 2 seconds after hearing it the phone rang and it was my husband who had also heard the report (we know wrapit quite well as we were shortlisted in the cake section for their wedding industry awards this year) and he called to ask if I'd heard the details.

We turned the radio up ready for the 5pm news and there was absolutely nothing mentioned. I then came home and scoured the net thinking I'd find out what had happened and again nothing. I even came on here earlier as I felt sure if something was up it would have reached the Hitched forums!!!

This is all I know but we definitely heard it on the news this afternoon.......

Oh Catherine thats so strange that happened today. A colleague told me about it at lunchtime today - and from what I heard they were in financial trouble and hoping to get venture capital funding but it was never going to happen so writing on the wall really for them to go bust.

Hope it hasn't affected too many couples though...

I agree it's wierd it happened today. Like I say, I came on here earlier expecting to see a thread about it but when there wasn't one I wondered whether to start one or not but then I thought maybe we were hearing things. It was only on the 4pm news but we heard it in our workshop and my husband heard it at home so I'm sure we weren't hearing things! Strange they withdrew the story before the 5pm news - let's hope to goodness it's not true although like you say, it's unlikely they'll survive if they are trying to get venture capital.

It seemed like such a great company when we had dealings with them for their awards but sounds like that may have been all PR!

I really feel for anyone who has used them.

We were thinking about using their charity gift list but choose Oxfam Unwrapped in the end.

Only certain cards not all according to this:

"As far as getting money back is concerned, there is hope if guests paid using a credit card or Visa Debit card. People need to contact their card provider and let them know that Wrapit looks to be going under. Unfortunately there is usually a time limit on claims. In the case of Visa this seems to be 90 days from the date of the transaction. With Mastercard it looks to be six months. The bad new is that Maestro and other debit cards other than Visa Debit offer no protection."

If any lurkers are using wrapit and have rung our consultant and I have relaxed a wee bit and think everything will work out OK. I'm pretty confident money spent already won't be 'lost'. At this point I don't care whether its us or our guests who get the refund, but a lot of money has been spent and I would hate it to be for nothing.

Its all a bit of a mess, but WP has been panic free thus far. I suppose something had to give.
