WWYD Cats who can I ask to look after them? (Carpet cleaning cost?)

rah, 2 October, 2008 at 11:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Hello

We're looking at renting accomodation at the moment since we are re-locating to cambridge and there's a possibility they might let us take our 2 cats if we agree to pay for the carpets to be professionally cleaned when we leave (although this is for a property that isn't available for a good 2/3 months after we need it)

Can anyone provide me with an idea of the cost of a professional carpet clean for a small 3 bed house please? - Thanks all your answers to this part have really helped.

The WWYD is has anyone been in this position before when moving into rental accomodation and what did you do with your cats? We're really stuck at the moment as my parents had agreeed to take our 2 cats, but now they can't, and I'm really worried about what to do, all my cat loving friends have 3 or more cats and can't cope with 2 more (and my 2 are high maintenance). So looking for ideas / options for people to look after my cats for about 2 months

As always any advice really appreciated! ?

I would reckon about £200 to clean the carpets in the house.

Hmm ok thank you, that's more than I was hoping, but still cheaper than a cattery!

With the important added bonus of actually having the cats with us. This is such a stressful time!

Our rented house has cream carpets in the hallway (don't get me started!) and we have to get them steam cleaned when we leave. We were given a leaflet for a company the landlord has used before, and IIRC it's about £35. That's in Plymouth. Think it's for machine hire though, not to have someone come in and do it.

Sorry if that's not very helpful ?

Thank you that is helpful, I hadn't really considered that as an option.

I'd check with the landlord or agents that it is ok to hire a carpet cleaning machine, rather than using a professional company. I remember when we rented the landlord insisted that we use a company rather than doing it ourselves, and wanted to see the receipt to confirm (but then again he was a fussy budger who checked everything, including the filter in the bottom of the washing machine to make sure it was spotless and had been washed through before we moved!)

We are just about to rent our house out and all agents are stating we should get our house professionally cleaned before the let so we can demand it is handed back to us in that state.

Years ago we lived in rented with 2 cats. We hired a carpet cleaning machine from a tool hire place, it was about £40 + detergents. Was quite hard work but worth the cost saving.

I'm now a landlady and we allow pets but if there was any damage I'd take it out of the bond.

I think it cost about £150 to have the carpets cleaned in out little cottage when we moved out - it was part of the agreement with the letting agents. I wouldn't have put the cats into a cattery - I've never done that, but certainly wouldn't for a long period. We've always been lucky though, in having someone to look after them if we're away, or they've always been able to come with us where ever we go!

House moving really is stressful though x

It's standard practise on letting contracts to stipulate the house must be professionally cleaned (by a company) for shorthold tenancy agreements, and it's common for an extra amount as deposit (probably the same as a month's rent)

Sometimes they even demand the house is treated for fleas. I wish I had when tenants turned up with a dog. Bloody thing had fleas and left flea eggs in the carpet ?

When the weather warmed up they hatched and the children who now live there were covered in bites.

Thanks all. We have decided to go for accomodation provided by my new work as it's about all we can afford however they only allow pets in unfurnished houses and they only have a furnished house available, so we're a bit stuck!

It all depends, I think.. A mate of mine rents a 2bed house, and it has a cat-flap on the back door. She's not told the estate agents that she has a cat, but apparently it's not such a big deal with their agents.. Don't quote me on that, though! The previous house's agent told her that as long as she gets the carpet professionally cleaned, it's fine.

There's a place on Newmarket Road in Cambridge, called HSS or something I think, and there you can rent a cleaning machine, complete with detergents, etc. Not sure of the price, though!

Good luck with the move, I know how stressful it all can be! And the rental market in Cambridge has sky-rocketed because of the new developments around the train station. £1500 for a 2bed flat? ?

Thank you. That really helps in terms of an idea as to how much cleaning might cost.

Right now I need to have a brain wave as to other cat options, someone who could have them both for about 2 months, I'm going to miss them so much!

Your vet might be able to suggest something.

Am I right in thinking that the move is work-related? Could the employers fund cattery costs for that time?

When I first got Marmite we were in rented, we weren't suppose to have pets without prior notice, but I'd conveniently forgot that!

When we had inspection we just put her out side, we never had any quibbles as long as the place was clean and tidy.

I'd be in two minds whether to actually tell the landlord about your *** cats...but I'm naughty!

Good suggestion, and they're going to the vets tomorrow for their boosters, will ask thanks.

Yes the move is work related, (well remembered!) sadly both H and I have moved for new jobs (rather than been transferred) so not much chance of the work paying for it. I'm hoping my parents might manage it, but they already have 2 lovely but problematic cats of their own and they're really worried about how one of them will react (he's prone to spraying if he gets upset)

hmm it's a another tricky one at an already stressful time. If anyone wants to buy a house in Norwich or have 2 cats on lone, please let me know!!
