WWYD - florist related

MISSMAYFLOWER, 6 October, 2010 at 13:01 Posted on Planning 0 15

We first went to see our florist in the middle of July and she said she would provide us with a quote within 2 weeks. This came and past so I chased her for a repsonse and she sent the quote through saying i should have had it in the post but obv a prob so she emailed it. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. The quote was very high so I emailed back with suggested amendments and my budget at the end of August. 3 weeks went by and then she sent an email saying my email had been caught in her Spam and she'd get back to me as soon as possible. That was over 2 weeks ago so we're still waiting for a quote for the flowers even though we started the process in July!

I'm just wondering whether you think its worth sticking with her or if I should just take my business elsewhere. I don't feel like I should have to chase people for things like this and although I appreciate she might be busy, this seems excessive. However, we've also booked her to do our chair covers which makes things more awkward - do you think w should just cancel this and lose the deposit as well if she seems unreliable? We;re looking at a spend of over £1k

She has worked at our venue a lot and seemed to be really good but I just think this kind of service is poor - what does everyone think?

Honest answer - find someone else. I have had real trouble with florists getting back to me with quotes and its very annoying - you would think they dont want the money. Did you get any other quotes, or is that the only one?

I would go and find more quotes. The trouble is, if she's this unreliable about getting back to you with quotes, do you want to trust her with your wedding flowers? I know people are busy and all, but that seems an excessive amount of time. Could you phone her and give her one more chance, as you've paid a deposit? x

Could we ask how much you paid as a deposit?

I haven't got any other quotes yet but I think I might have to. There is another company which will do our chair covers and table decs etc for reception for £400 - we're paying £300 for chair covers alone at the mo.

We paid £50 deposit for the chair covers.

I agree though, I just think I've been quite fair with timings but 3 months is getting ridiculous just for a quote - I'll be married at this rate before I get one. You would just think with so much money at stake (and effectively easy money as I was happy doing it all with her) she would make the effort.

Flowers seem to be the hardest part of the wedding!

I found it impossible getting quotes off florists. i'd look for others in the meanwhile and if you find someone better, i'd just go with her. i'd also not bother with the chair covers either - what's £50 lost in the grand scheme of things?

She is being ridiculous with those timings!

Frankly i'd be pulling my hair out! a lot of them don['t like pricing up something and then you taking the ideas/pricing and then going elsewhere! do these people NOT want our business? Grrrr!

thankfully my best mates mum has been a florist for 25 years and is AMAZING so i dont have that problem... on that subject if anyone in brum or surrounding want a recommendation, she is awesome and i have permission to give her number out! Smiley smile

It doesn't sound like she is that bothered by your business to be honest so I'd email her to say that and ask for the deposit back due to her failed communication with you. Waiting nearly 3 months for various quotes and still being no further forward to confirming an order is just down right rude on her behalf.

I think giving someone one chase up is fine as we are all human and can forget things but there is no excuse for needing several reminders so stuff her and find someone who values your business and money!

Thanks everyone - I think you are just confirming my thoughts now that its not me being unreasonable, its her being very poor with customer service.

PG - good idea to ask for the deposit back, its her fault after all that we are looking to cancel - if she'd replied on time we'd have gone ahead with everything as planned

I think I would get someone else for the flowers. At the end of the day, you ar eproviding her with business and you shouldn't have to chase. One late reply, you have given her the benefit of the doubt over. Another to me just seems like disorganisation / incompetence.

If she has been good with the chair covers and the venue say that she has done a good job there previously, then maybe use her for those!

Do you know, the more I hear stories like this, the more it makes my blood boil! How can any business not be bothered about such a substantial order! Beggars believe. My advice would be to go into her shop and ask her what the situation is and explain that this is the only thing which is holding up the process and you need to have her quote in writing within 7 days otherwise you will have to look at hiring someone else. You really don't need this hassle.

    Wouldn't happen where I work!!!

I'd bin her - request the deposit back for the chair covers, tell her why and move on. I'd not even give her the benefit of a 7 day reprieve. The florists where I work wouldn't dream of this type of customer service, and nor would I within my own business!!

You do risk losing your deposit however, but £50?... well I know its £50 but ...

As the others have said it really annoys me to hear stories like this it gives all florists a bad name.

I always do my estimates while the bride is with me so she has it to take away along with a copy of what is discussed.

I think legally if you paid a deposit you can ask for it back if it is a booking fee then you cannot, the same way a quote is more binding than an estimate, I always do estimates as usually things can, often more or less tables, bridesmaids , buutonholes etc so the total will almost always change

Look for someone else. You should have at least have had a quote by now, it sounds as if she doesn't want the business.Weall haver times when we are busy but it doesn't take long to do a quote or estimate of costs.

That;s what I thought, i know people are busy and I know next year's weddings may not always be a priority, but to not even provide the quote in almost 3 months, that is excessive.

Like people have said, if she is like this with the quotes, what will she be like on the day. Everything being delayed or not turning up with spoil the day.

I think I'll try and find a new florist to try in the area now - I might rethink doing some of the flowers myself/by the church now as well to make things simpler!

It doesn't matter if it is this year or next year she could give you an estimate of what it will cost if you have given her a list of what you want & what flowers etc. Prices will vary but a figure of approx cost will give you something to work on.
