WWYD i know something is wrong with my mum............................

Hi all

My mum is 57 not old at all but she can hardly walk without getting out of breath.

She literally crawls up her stairs to get to bed.

Her hands / fingers hardly open ( gp has said this is poor circulation ) Although i think is artheritis

She has lost stones in weight due to thyroid medication being to strong ( this is now being changed )

In the past 10 days she has fell three times, last Thur she damaged the ligament in her leg, Last night she fell again and has cut / scratched her face.

She has had on going problems like the above for the past 3 years but no specific diagnosis has been made.

She has also had bouts of bronchitis

She lives with My daughter 20 and my granddaughter who is 2. My daughter doesnt tell me the half of it and i work full time doing shifts so find it hard to see mum more than once a week.

Im meeting up with her this afternoon and i have made an apt for Our Doctors next week. I know she will not be happy but im not sure if there is something she isnt telling us or if she isnt telling the Dr the true extent of her falling etc.

Not sure why im psting but have to let it out as i love my mum and want to wrap her in cotton wool x

I think you've done the only thing you can do... make a gp appointment then encourage her to go.

FWIW my mum is a head in the sand type person and will try to push worries to one side rather than face them head on... I think in your shoes I would be 'firm but fair' and explain to her that you're acting with love as you're all worried about her health, you've all noticed she's struggling and want her to get checked out as it's gone on long enough. Offer to go with her too if she'd like some support?

I'll look out for an update - hope all's well x

You have done the right thing by making an appointment with your GP, can you ask your daughter to be honest with you aswell and find out whats been happeneing that you don't know about (so you have a good history for the GP)

I hope she agrees to go and will also keep my eyes open for an update ?

    ? to you.

In my experience with family falling for no apparent reason, it's been down to having a high dose of medication over a long term. So I'd say she would need blood levels checked, I would also push to get a ultrasound on her stomach to make sure that she has not got an underlying problem such as an ulcer.

As for your Daughter, she is 20 & has a young child herself , so really is looking after 2 dependants & having somebody ill for no reason is quite hard on a day to day basis, that I guess you end up switching off.

    Hope you get somewhere

    xx

    Thanks for responses.

I met up with mum at lunch time hence not responding sooner and she was a but upset i have made the apt but it also transpires she has been getting Dizzy spells.

Her thyroid meds have been too high as i mentioned she has lost too much weight so it could be linked to that.

I will take her Wed morning and hopefully it wont be anything serious ( although i cant help thinking there is something )

Will keep you guys up to date x
