WWYD- medical questions- long, sorry

Hyacinth, 6 June, 2008 at 12:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

My sister had glandular fever about 2 ½ years ago. Her GP is extremely crap, and I know this as he is our family GP.

Anyway, GF not being serious she got on with life. But she has constant reoccurring problems. We have, so far put this down to the fact GF can take years to recover properly from.

But, 21/2 years she is having an awful time of it- her glands are constantly raised, all over her neck, behind her ears, large grey lumps. She is always exhausted. Her muscles ache so badly sometimes she can’t walk. We parents have done emergency doctor rushes a few times where she has been crying because she can’t move or speak. She has been on a number of courses on penicillin and at least 20 GP appointments during this time. Her voice is so badly affected she has lost all its femininity- she sounds like scratchy old man.

We managed to get her referred to ENT- they told her to start speech therapy and said she had nodules on her throat. She is still under going Speech therapy, but how this can actually help is beyond me.

I saw her at the weekend and she asked me to feel her head- her head is covered in lumps. She is like the elephant man. Some of the lumps stand an inch and a half away from her head. I can’t see how this is normal- I’m not even sure you have glands in your head?

The GP is useless. She can’t see another GP in the practice as he simply rents a room in the surgery independently. She has seen other GPS though, either locums or emergency drs, and non have been able to help any further.

I spoke to my acupuncturist who said acupuncture is good for the after effects of GF. I’ve spoken to her about it but she has a needle phobia so is reluctant. She is trying to move surgeries to see if this helps.

I decided to do some research into this to see if there are any alternative therapies or dietary requirements which may help. But instead, what I’ve come across tells me that GF shouldn’t linger for this amount of time, and if it does it can be connected to a number of diseases she does not appear to have.

I really really want to help her but don’t know what to do. I am considering taking her for a private consultation but I don’t know where to start finding the right person.

I guess I’m just wondering if anyone can think of anything I can do we haven’t tried. Or maybe we just need to accept nothing can be done until it goes away?

I would definitely take her for a private consultation. It doesn't sound right at all.

I had GF pretty badly in my teens (was hospitalised) but recovered fairly quickly. 15 years later though I still get swollen glands when I'm run down, but no where near like the lumps that your sister is experiencing.

I would call Bupa and get a private appointment set. Best wishes.

Thanks KTC, I'm leaning towards this too. I am with Pru so maybe I could start with them. Shes 19 and I feel so bad that she can't even enjoy a night out without coming home at 9pm exhusted.

    Actually i'll call them now.

If your / her GP is so crap why is he still your GP? Am I missing something here ... buit it seems to me obvious to boot him out and find a new one. The poor girl clearly needs better help and support than she's currently getting.

He’s the family GP, and TBH I don’t we’ve ever had reason to need him for something like this- I mean he is useless but if you’re just going to him for a throat infection or a smear or regular childhood illnesses there’s no problem really. I was under the impression you had to see a GP in your catchment area? I know I have to in London. Although I’m sure you can move if you have the kind of problems we’re having (and that’s what we are trying to do) its not something which has been necessary before.

I don’t actually expect him to do anything about it, but he needs to refer her. A new GP would again go through the mentions required before referring her which would waste more time I think (unless my sister can impress on her how long she’s already been ill)

I'm sure you can ask second opinion if you are not happy with the diagnosis from an NHS GP. Perhaps it is worth asking the surgery what the procedure is for this.

Hope you get it sorted it sounds dreadful, your poor sis.

Firstly, I'd get your sister to find a new GP - surely there's another in the area she can register with?

I would go private and see a specialist. What kind of specialist I have no idea. I'm amazed her ENT hasn't done more to be honest!

I think it's always worth seeing someone for a second opinion. When I first started to have my nose problems I saw an ENT, who sent me to an allergy specialist. Within 15 minutes I found out I am been on the wrong asthma medication for over 20 years!! He gave me new drugs and my asthma has been 20 times better! I don't want to knock GP's but I have very little faith in them for more obscure illnesses and often I have been fobbed off with antibiotics. She will need a referral letter but I'd suggest you find who you want to see and then she needs to go in to he GP and say "I am going to see X, I need a referral letter, can you please do one as I have an appointment on x". She needs to be firm, I had a right game trying to get one off my GP.

    Good luck!

I'm sorry your sister is having such a terrible time of it and I hope you get it resolved quickly.

Make an appointment with the GP today, then when you get to see him tell him that you're not happy with the current treatment as it's not working, therefore you want a referal.

I'm under the impression that if you ask for a referal they have to do it (I'm probably talking out my backside). Everytime I've asked for a referal I've gotten one and whatever issue has been quickly diagnosed and treated.

Failing that, I agree you should talk to the pru.

Thanks all for your really helpful suggestions. I think the plan of attack will be:

Move GPs- possibly making a final appointment with them beforehand and insisting on a second opinion. In fact, I’m going to go with her (she’s a very gentle person and I don’t believe she is giving him the grilling he deserves)

Find out whether she can contact the ENT consultants office again to see whether they will consider seeing her again as part of on going treatment

Get the information for a private consultation.

In fact I will ask her to request her notes too. That way we can go to the new GP equiped.

Even if this is part and parcel of recovering, she deserves to know what's going on.

    Thank you Kellfi and Jules.

I am trying not to internet disgnose, but I must admit cronic fatigue syndrome sounds very very like her symptoms and apparently affects about 10% of GF sufferers. I am going to suggest it though. draining the lumph glands sounds like something to look into further- i know she'd love to get rid of her "lady lumps" as she affectionatly call them!

    Hi Hyacinth

I went up to Glasgow to see a naturopath called Jan De Vries and to be honest I have never come away from a consultation feeling so positive and in the four weeks since I've seen him the problems, which I have had for years, have nearly gone.

He does do clinics in other places if Glasgow is too far to travel or may even be able to communicate over the phone/email if you just want to ask his advice.

I hope he is able to help your sister as much as he has my family, myself, mother and brother have all been helped by him. My brother was diagnosed with epilepsy but the traditional medicine wasn't stopping the tremors, the medication he got from Jan De Vries has stopped them!!

There is a website where you can get more information www.jandevrieshealth.co.uk

Jan de vries is the best. He used to have a slot on a show in belfast called the kelly show. People came from far and wide to see him. He knows what is wrong with you before you even tell him.

He had a clinic in belfast that he came too, once a month. I used to work in the health food shop that ran the clinic. He is honestly amazing.
