WWYD - New puppy related

HappyGirl, 1 August, 2008 at 10:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 1

Hi there

Hoping I can get some opinions on my dilema please.

We have 2 dogs at the moment and one has a terminal illness which is being controlled by drugs :-(

She is happy in herself but we have made the decision that we are not going to up her pills any more as she is currently on 9 pills a day!!!!

We have decided that we would like another dog - one of the same breed.

We have a 21 month old daughter who adores the dog and also the other dog thinks she is god ;-)

We know it will affect them both badly when she dies.

To cut a long story short we have been offered a new pup and are going to see it today.

I just don't know whether having another dog whilst one is poorly is the right thing to do. But on the otherhand dealing with another dog at the moment is good timing for me and we wont get this opportunity again for another 12 months when I know the other dog wont be alive :-( (its horrid having to write that) the reason being that the breeding season for this type is only this time of year due to working committments.

To be honest i think it would be too much for the ill dog to cope with a puppy around it.

A puppy is a bundle of energy and wont just slot in to the family life without help, time and patience.

We have just looked after a pup for a friend and although its lovely its been hard work and its been none stop hassle to our own dog who had quite had enough of having his beard pulled by sharp naughty teeth,Had our dog also been ill I would feel guilty that his last days are not peaceful and happy ones.

So no I dont think its a good idea.

Can i ask why just because the dog takes lots of pills you are stopping them?will the dog not suffer beacuse of this?

I take about 30 pills a day but I still have plenty life in me.
