wwyd office politics (long)

Okay.

There are 3 of us in an office at any one time.

I work 3 days and someone else does the other 2 days.

We have 2 full time people.

1 of the full time people is slighlty higher up than the rest of us, almost like a team leader I guess.

The other full time person makes so many mistakes our whole department has had a complaint made against it as a result.

Anyway the team leader keeps changing how things are done and saying things like 'I told you the other day' when she hasn't. She is also fault picking and making stupid rules. The latest one was discriminatory, I have checked with another department involved and they have agreed and asked for it not to be done that way so I have to now admit I went behind her back to ask that it be changed. The other decision has not been agreed by other departments and I do not feel comfy going through with it when it has not back bone. Basically we make appointments if someone fails to attend we reschedule. 1 out of the 10 departments we have put a limit on it saying 3 interviews only and our team leader has applied it to all. So now I need to contact a department who doesnt know about this to ask if someone who has missed 3 appointments can have another - to me that is idiotic.

Other problems I have are that they all gossip 75% of the time and the work load is backing up terribly. The girl who makes mistakes is on the internet all day long where team leader can see and instead of addressing this issue lets her carry on with it and often asks her whats on it (sky news).

I am only 3 days a week, I am probably gonna come across as a spoil sport but I just think something needs to be done. I dont know whether to go to the team leader and ask her to address it or whether I need to go to our line manager. I don't want to go too high but I dont want the office to become awkward or for this team leader to cause me problems because I have spoken to her.

The girl who makes mistakes, doesn't answer the phone, doesn't pick the voice mail messages up, never deals with the references and I just feel everything she is unhappy to do she leaves for me to pick up on a Monday morning. I cant talk to anyone about it, its like banging your head against a brick wall.

So, you have three people - two full time, with you and another person essentially doing a job share ?

I this instance I think I'd approach it with the team leader, by asking questions. When she says that she's told you and she hasn't - claim not to remember and ask her exactly when and where, and then write down what she says. If she makes new rules, ask if she's checked them with department X, HR, line manager or whoever. If you've had stuff left over from the other person, pass it on to her with a smile and say 'I think X didn't get time to finish this and I don't have time for it" If she's still handling things in a way that you're not happy with then go to the line manager.

That probably sounds like I'm trying to teach granny to suck eggs. I just think that asking her to clarify things makes you come across as less bolshy - and it gives her a chance to get things sorted out before you go to your line manager. (Although from what you say, it sounds like you're probably going to end up having to go to your line manager anyway.)

Good luck - it sounds like a horrible situation.
