WWYD re osteopath?

Gryfon, 22 July, 2009 at 10:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I went to see the osteopath about my back on Friday and he wants to see me again this Friday. Just got the bill through and it's £57.50! My back felt alright for about 3 days and now it's painful again ☹️ So I feel like the money has been wasted as it hasn't really helped!

So I can't decide whether to cancel the osteopath and just put up with a bad back, go to the doctor and see if she can refer me to a specialist or just go to the osteopath and see what he says. I'm feeling decidedly upset and grumpy about the whole thing now which isn't helping with home life and housework! ☹️

I don't know about these things but the most logical thing to me is that the oestopath isn't finished with your treatment yet (hence wanting to see you again on Friday). You said that it defnitely made a difference (albeit for a fairly short space of time) so whatever he/she did must have had some effect.

Go along on Friday to have the next stage of the treatment done and whilst you're there have a chat with him/her to see what kind of timeframe they are expecting the treatment to last, then you'll know where you're at.

I know it's expensive but it really can't be much fun hobbling about with a painful back can it. Also if the treatment is looking to be lengthly then maybe see the doctor about a referral?

I think it does often take a few sessions for it to work - I spent a fortune on mine for my knee. Why not give him a call and see what he says? (Except it will almost certainly be: "Come in again, you need another session.")

I went with back pain after I broke a couple of ribs and it took about 8 sessions to sort it out (each costing £40 that's a london price too so have to say that the £57 sounds quite expensive!). It did work for me and the pain has never come back but it's a progressive thing rather than a one session thing iyswim. He will probably want you to do a course of treatment, can you look at other osteopath's prices in your area? HTH. Emma

Thanks all, knew you'd talk sense! ? Shall go and see him on Friday and have a chat then. I know he mentioned referring me to have a scan as I've never had any and have had these back problems for years. However I've been told it's because I'm hypermobile so I'm not sure if there is actually much they can do ☹️

A first appt with an osteo is usually longer and costs more, as they take a history. They would have to be absolutely brilliant to sort out a back problem in one session!

When my back went this year, it took about 5 sessions to ease of. Prioir to that I was going once a month anyway, as I would go, feel better, gradually get worse.
