X Posted and DEFINITELY a TMI but health related Q....

Stupidgirl45, 15 February, 2009 at 15:19 Posted on Planning 0 19

*overshare alert*

Basically I've got to go and have an ultrasound where they put the ultrasound *wand* up inside you.

Has anyone had this done? Does it hurt?

Am a bit freaked as its a male doc and a couple years ago I was a victim of a minor sexual assault so the whole male doc thing is weirding me a out a little, so if I know what the proceedure is like I might calm down a bit more

Thanks for listening to my massive OVERSHARE

Oh and I'm not pregnant!!! Just realised you might have thought I was lol

SG ?

I've had one years ago when they diagnosed me with Poly cycstic ovaries. From what I can remember it wasn't painful at all, I could just feel pressure when she was moving it around trying to find my ovaries. Can you not ask for a female doc to do it? I had someone from the radiology dept do mine. HTH

I've had it done, it's not painful, the probe is a narrow diameter ad they use a lot of lubricant.

It's much easier than a smear.

Hey SG ... cant comment on this type of procedure as all I've ever had is the common smear ... but I'm sure you'll be fine .. but yes, ask for a female doctor - I think given your history they would utterly understand your request.....

    Hello All,

Yes I posted on BT too (v. surreal LOL) and am all reassured now.

I am not overly fussed about the doc too much - I know I'll be okay and I kind of want to face my demons.

Its just the showing your muff to strange people that i HATE HATE HATE

    Am having it tomorrow.....

So will of course report back LOL LOL (joke...)

I have had 3, 2 during a pregnancy which ended up in mmc and the 3rd with my bundle of joy. Just take deep breaths and you will be fine. With mine they used plenty of KY. I also had to have a nurse in with me as it was a male sonographer.

It was very discreet, with a sheet over me.

    good luck with it

I've had this done several times and it's fine. The male consultant did it loads when I had my ectopic and he was lovely and there was always a nurse on hand as well. They also cover you up and make you feel really comfortable as well.

    Hope you're ok

Have had one - a bit uncomfortable but not unbearable. if it is a male dr you are well within your rights to ask for a chaperone to be in the room with you. x

When I was 17 I had a cystoscopy due to severe cystitis (just like Starstuck) and constant kidney infections and I was terrified but honestly it was fine. More embarrassing than anything else and I had a male doctor do the procedure but with a female nurse with me .

It was much easier than a smear so I hope your experience is ok. xx

I had one done about 7 years ago and it was quite uncomfortable but I was very tense as it was to confirm a miscarriage. The best thing to do is try and stay calm (yeah, I know easy for me to say) and relax. Maybe take some rescue remedy with you to calm the nerves. Is your fiance coming with you? If so, he can hold your hand and talk random rubbish at you to take your mind off things.

Re the embarassment bit, it is a bit odd at first but its just like going for a smear test, but way less horrible. I think I've seen you in a few threads mentioning wanting kids after you're married, so having random medical peeps getting intimate with your bits will be something that becomes very routine!!

Good luck and hope it all goes well.

I had one done when they were diagnosing fibroids.

It's a very narrow probe and uncomfortable but certainly not painful. I found it far less uncomfortable than a smear test.

I had one of these when i was 6 weeks pregnant with my son, it reminded me of a mini light sabre from Star wars. It didnt hurt just felt a bit uncomfortable (but i was very tense) and it didnt take very long.

I agree with all the other ladies, ask for a female doctor as you want to be as relaxed as possible. I had a smear test recently that was much more painful.

Hope all goes well for you and try not to worry

Not had anything like this SG but jut wanted to say I hope all is ok.

As everyone said, I would be very suprised if they didn't have a female nurse in with you at the same time, I'd imagine it's standard procedure with this sort of thing now x

I had one done a few years ago and echo exactly what most others have said. They use loads of lube and it wasn't painful at all. You can feel it of course but just like pressure as they are moving it around. The worst bit for me was because I had drunk so much water because it was an ultrasound, I wasn't listening to what the dr said because I was concentrating on getting outside to go to the loo!

If this helps, it wouldn't bother me at all if I had to go and have one done again. That is saying something as I have the lowest pain threshold ever!

I had one done about 5 years ago when they were diagnosing endometriosis. I had a normal ultrasound first and then they told me that had to do an internal scan and that not to worry as it was about the size of a tampon. Ummm from what I remember it was not the size of a tampon at all but I promise it didn't hurt at all and I can't remember it being that uncomfy either. Like someone else said I'd rather than another scan done instead of a smear.

You will be fine with regards to the actual instrument they use, it really is nothing to worry about, but if you are worried about the doctor please so ask for someone else.
