Your best compliment

glider12000, 15 December, 2008 at 18:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

I was complimented today in an interview today by my interviewer. I was described as "eloquent and erudite". ?

What has been your best compliment?

I can only think of rude ones ?

That's a lovely compliment to be given Glider. Someone once said I was "funny and lovely", 2 traits I am happy to be associated with. Seems a bit lame in comparison with yours though.

My best compliment ever was when I was about 16 or 18, in a cafe in Covent Garden, and some guy walked past me and said 'you are absolutely *gorgeous*' - I went utterly weak at the knees as no-one had ever said anything like that to me before, and he was at least 15 years older than me and was a cool rocker-type - I spent the rest of the evening floating on air, and trying to spot him again, so that we could get married and make sweet love together for ever and ever ?

Wow I don't even proper know what erudite means, but I know it's good - go you! ?

"I knew within 5 mintues of you walking into the interview that you would be fantastic for this company, after a year I can safely say my gut instinct was spot on"

"I've always loved playing the batchelor, but for you I'd give it up in a heartbeat" (This meant a lot because it came from a mate who was a confirmed womaniser and didn't believe in relationships, didn't take him up on the offer but was very flattered!)

"I'd do anything for those beautiful blue eyes of yours"

"Marry me" from someone I'd met only once but with whom I had a long-standing phone flirtation. When I laughed and said don't be silly, he said "I mean it, you're the nicest person I've ever met in my life and I would marry you tomorrow". The way he said it was the most romantic proposal I've ever had but don't tell Mr Carrot.

'what a gorgeous smile' This was said to me 3 days after my op when I was walking down the hospital corridor for the first time - I looked like shite, was in a hospital gown and just happened to smile at the hospital porter. It was just what I need to hear!

'nice arse' said by a male member a few months ago after posting some before and after photo's on the weight loss forum. It's the one and only time someone has made me blush online! I don;t care if he meant it or not it made me feel great all day!

A couple of weeks ago, at a conference in Warsaw, a highly distinguished Polish film historian (whose reputation very much preceded him, at least as far as I was concerned) not only recognised me from my namebadge, but had actually read my stuff and said that I was one of the best writers on Polish cinema outside Poland.

Granted, I'm one of the only regular writers on Polish cinema outside Poland, so it's not quite as sweeping a claim as it sounded, but it was hugely flattering all the same. Not to mention cunning, as he then talked me into writing a piece for his heavy-duty academic journal for no money... ?

I have recently been described as "articulate and persuasive" and "completely unflappable" - which was nice.

Although I still like it when G&T tells me I'm "the championest of champions", but she might be biased.

What a lovely thread Glider. ? I have a tendency to be very harsh on myself, so it's been lovely having a think about the lovely things people have said to me over the years. Of course, I have now gone through these urtterings and sifted out the ones which were made in the hope of achieving entry into my vagina, and I think that leaves about one genuine gratuitous compliment. ?

It was from the head of my old secondary school. I went back about 8 years ago to speak to assembly about oxford uni, as part of oxford's 'target schools' programme aimed at encouraging more state school applicants. My school is a state school in a rough area, with an even rougher catchment area, but it had committed teachers and a great PTA, and it had (to an extent it still does have) high aspirations. I was the first in the school's history to go to oxbridge, but since then several have followed in my footsteps- not because of any massive campaigning on my part tbh, but probably because the psychological barrier of 'a kid like me from this slummy school won't stand a chance' had been lifted by my own successful application. So, anyway.... I gave a short presentation about life at oxford and all of the fab opportunities available, and afterwards the rector said to me, and I will never forget 'You are the embodiment of our school's motto, hinc vera virtus*, and I hope you are as proud of yourself as we all are of you'. I am filling up a wee bit typing this actually. ?

    * out of this place comes true worth

How lovely Lou. I wasn't very good at school but my music teacher once said to my mum I was 'one of those people who made it worth your while getting out of bed in the morning'. Teachers were never nice about me, I could have kiised him.

My yoga teacher is always full of good, positive comments. I loof her ?
