Your perfect (not much effort) picnic?

Mrs Magic, 4 August, 2009 at 11:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

We're having a picnic with five adults and two children (a toddler and a preschooler) as definites and possibly another two adults, a newborn and preschooler on Sunday. It's likely to be very busy (it's the Edinburgh Festival Cavalcade in Holyrood Park) so not might not have masses of space to have a big spread on the ground.

What would you like to eat at your perfect picnic that won't take hours of preperation?

We had a mini picnic/packed lunch on Sunday and I just quickly made an assortment of white bread sandwiches and roasted some chicken legs but it was a duller than a dull thing. ?

Cheat and go to Markies on Princes' Street and buy ready made stuff. They had some picnic looking stuff in the Aberdeen store yesterday but couldn't stop to look at it properly as I had a frozen chicken defrosting in my bag ?.

Or Volvona and Corona's at the top of Leith Walk for deli bits.

Ciabattas with goat cheese and roasted red peppers.

Simples, delicious, and needs v little in way of protective packaging!

Salsa with veg to dip (carrots, cucumber etc).

    Strawberries.

Pate with nice bread that you can tear pieces from.

    Cheese and crackers.

    Grapes.

I'd probably be tempted to roast a ham as well, and make a few rolls.

I'm not a big meat eater so my perfect picnic usually consists of a big bowl of cold rice or cous cous, boiled eggs, fresh beetroot, new potatoes, tomatoes, lovely bread and some grated carrot. I usually take some chicken too and some ham for Mr Nora. Pringles are also a must for me ?

Mmmm, pork pies. And samasos and things from the deli counter. I love little food.

    Valvona and Corona. ?

Thank you everyone, very helpful! ?

Mmmm, I'm loving all these ideas and want to go on a picnic today now. [stamps feet]

I do make a rather nice chicken liver pate so that plus all the traditional bits (pork pies, yum!) are very appealing but I adore couscous and all the med stuff so that's an option too. Decisions, decisions! Either way we will definitely need nice bread and cake! ?

My feeling about picnics is you don't want stuff that needs a fork to eat, which would rule out couscous. Especially for children.

Exactly this, less the radishes. Drool.

The fork thing is a very good point actually, thank you Sophie. Finger foods it is, I think.

    Thanks again everyone. ?

My sister made a faaaabulous broad bean, pea, mint and feta fritatta for a picnic the other week, it was gorgeous, and stiff enough to be sliced up and eaten without cutlery.

    have a fab time! xx
