Your thoughts on graffiti

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 10 April, 2013 at 19:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

Did you know that 'graffiti' is a plural of 'graffito'? (Same for panini/panino).

In a synthesis of the Thatcher/housing threads, my thoughts turn to the rash of new flats in Manchester, many converted mills etc. One of these blocks sports the rather eloquent piece of graffito, 'Yuppie boxes built on the graves of the working classes'. It has remained for years, so I can only assume that Manchester Council are sympathetic to the message.

Less eloquently, recently spotted near my work, is 'Young, angry, no job, anarchy'. I might have more sympathy for such a plight, had the artist not misspelt 'Yong', thus indicating why he might find it difficult to get a job.

Public graffiti spaces can be fab.

I would be proud to sport a Banksy on the side of my house (not for monetary gain).

Any interesting graffiti to share? Ever indulged?

I hate tagging (think that's what it's called), even if I agree with the message. It just looks like vandalism. However in both East London (where I used to live) and parts of Copenhagen (where I live now) there are some excellent pieces of artwork. I haven't got any pics of either, unfortunately. Haven't yet taken the pics of Copenhagen graffiti yet and pics of London street art were on another computer ☹️

I do love a bit of graffiti art ❤️ Banksy!

Some of the graffiti that gets written/drawn in gents toilets really makes me chuckle. I recall seeing a naked lady with her legs spread scribbled above the urinals once, i had to switch urinal couldn't have a hairy fanny in my face while trying to go for a wee.

Also when someone has defaced a poster/billboard (with a willy/mustache/beards etc) it never fails to amuse me (i'm such a child)

I watched an interesting programme about the street war between Banksy and his biggest rival... Was interesting watching.

I don't mind proper graffiti art, I don't like tagging or defacing for no reason other than to scrawl your name.

There was a wall in Whitburn where I used to live (Tyne & Wear) that for years wore the words:

    "This ain't graffiti - gis a job"

    This.

There is a beautiful old viaduct near where I live and it is ruined by graffiti of 'Bex Smiley heart Tom' and random names. If it was a proper design I wouldn't mind so much, although it would still be a bit weird and not in keeping with the rest of the surroundings, but at least it would be a bit more expressive.

Yes I use the word graffito on an almost daily basis with my work.

My favourite was on a bridge in Bath, I use to see it on my way home 'strive to be yourself'. Love the use of the word strive because it means hard work and being yourself is hard work which I think people forget?

FACT: BBC magazine once quoted a report of mine where I reference some very famous graffiti... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-13524208

I would just like to congratulate you on this. I find it massively frustrating when people in sandwich shops / cafes ask for 'a panini'. But then, I am a bit of a dick.

At Munich airport with H we "borrowed" a newspaper from the rack, drew glasses/beards/daggers-in-heads etc all over the photos on the cover and then put the paper back and waited until next unsuspecting person picked it up.

Not big or clever...but we laughed a lot.

I do know about the panini/panino thing but I'll be damned if I ever ask for a panino. Someone will spit in it just to punish me for being a pretentious knob.

I think there is a big difference between graffiti like 'Loz 4 Gaz 4eva. IDST' etc and graffiti that IMO is an artform such as Banksy.

I have five favourite pieces of graffiti, here are four of them:

The fifth one might be a bit controversial for some so I've chosen not to post it. I also like Banky's 'Grannies', but not sure if it can be classed as graffiti or not.

Ha ha, you've just reminded me- on my and OH's first 'date' we were flicking through a newspaper someone had left in the pub; we started drawing boobs and fart lines on people. Laughed our heads off! It wasn't long afterwards that he turned to me and said "Don't know about you, but this just feels.....right? Doesn't it?". Think he was pleased he'd finally found someone as childish as him! ?

Same! There's something else that is similar, but I really can't remember what it is. I'm sure it's a food. Perhaps I'm thinking of antipasti.

Love the Liverpool Airport one Rizzo! Made this QPR fan chuckle.

I don't really get the whole tagging thing. I love banksy, I think he's amazing and I would like some of his artwork in my house.

In Portsmouth, a random load of sprayed ducks appeared after one weekend. strange it was. On walls and pavements.

I never really know with this as antipasti is the plural but antipasto is often used. I hesitate because a plate of antipasto is often made up of numerous things. So would the plate be an antipasto plate and the contents be antipasti?

Salami is the plural of salame.

You've already done antipasto/antipasti. Antipasti is composed on individual pieces of antipasto.

In Italian in general, plurals end in -i.

Paparazzi/paparazzo but I think a lot of people do actually use paparazzo to describe one.

    Didn't know the salami one.
