And in alphabetical order too... anyone would think you had the list already....?

ETA I just noticed you have In The Mood For Love on there. Wonderful film. I might have to change my list to incorporate it. and Ed Wood is fab, too. I wondered whether it was the Bela Lugosi/ Hungarian cinema connection that helped it onto the list?

Actually, it's because it's just about the most pleasant surprise I've had in a cinema in the last twenty years - I expected it to take the same line that literally everyone else did with Ed Wood (i.e. let's all point and laugh at the incompetent hack), but it was so much richer than that, largely because I think Tim Burton recognised that he had more in common with Wood than otherwise (talent being the only significant gap).

The last thing I expected was for it to be so moving - especially Bela Lugosi's speech about having no home (eat your heart out, King Lear!) and the ending where Wood is watching the premiere of Plan Nine from Outer Space in a beatific trance and saying "This is it - this is the one I'll be remembered for!"

Mr Vampire! A magnificent film - if you haven't seen it, treat yourself, as it's not only on YouTube in its entirety, but their version has the original gloriously semi-literate subtitles that were cleaned up for its British DVD release.

The opening scene alone will determine whether it's your sort of thing - as will the phrase "the definitive hopping vampire zombie kung fu film". ?

I saw it way back in 1986, as part of a Hong Kong all night quintuple bill at the late lamented Scala Cinema, years before deranged Hong Kong films became fashionable over here.

It was the first one up, and the audience initially groaned when they realised that it was subtitled, but got into it almost immediately - and the police station scene (jump to 5:56) had them cheering and applauding.

At the time, I assumed I'd never get a chance to see it again, and it was a good four or five years before I managed it. Now, the younger generation can order it in a trice, and have no idea how lucky they are.
