You're never too old!

maccamanda, 3 September, 2013 at 17:39 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi

Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member. I'm getting married (for the first time) in September 2014 - just a few weeks after my 60th birthday! As it's my first wedding (and his second) we're going to have a big do - about 100-120 guests. My parents are no longer with us so my brother will give me away and obviously me and my fiance are financing the whole thing.

Anyone else out there who is an "older" bride? Any tips re. suitable dresses? Order of speeches and etiquette to suit grown up families? Basically any thoughts you have would be welcomed. Never thought it would happen, so I'm open to all ideas as had no preconceptions.

?

Firstly let me say hello and welcome.

I got married on my 45th birthday so I'm classed as an older bride. The best advice I can give you is to have what you and your H2B want and don't worry about what others say or think.

Another older bride here, I had my legal ceremony 3 weeks ago at the age of 46, so congratulations and welcome!

As Loveska has said Monsoon is lovely, do you know what you want to wear yet?

I'll be 42 when I get married and my h2b will be 50. Its second time around for both of us and one kindly old soul suggested I should wear something 'appropriate' for my aged and non-virginal state! I'm having a proper wedding dress with tiara and veil lol. Wear whatever feels right for you, especially as you've not been married before. My children are giving me away even though my father is around. He said he gave me away once so isnt doing it again lol. I've asked the kids to do a speech as well as h2b, but I may yet do one myself as well. My advice would be to go with whatever feels right for you and ignore all etiquette x

Lovely, congratulations! I don't have much advice really but I'd say what the others have, outfit wise go with what you want and not what you think you should wear :o)

Hello & welcome to hitched, hope you love it here Smiley smile
My gran actually got married 2nd time round when she was in her 60's, she wore a lovely peachy coloured dress & jacket but no idea where from and it was years ago now anyway Smiley smile
I agree wear whatever you want and try get an idea of styles you like etc & get googling Smiley smile
But I don't think you can go wrong with m&S, Debenhams, monsoon etc...they have some really lovely, classy outfits so sure you'd find something you like there.
Look forward to hearing more of your plans & welcome again Smiley smile

    Welcome & Congratulations Maccamanda!

I don't have many tips for dresses etc but second what the others have said about being comfortable and what you want.
There are some nice dresses here https://www.cuttingedgebrides.com/mature-brides-t113 .. which are aimed at the older bride.

    Have fun planning! Smiley smile

Welcome to hitched, and congratulations! xx

I'm an older bride, i'll be 50 next year, and marry six months later.

I started out thinking we'd go with a quiet low key event, but when we started to plan it, its become a full on wedding, with all the trimmings we wantSmiley smile

The dress worries me, i don't want to be fat and fifty in a young woman's dress, BUT I've tried some on, and i feel lovely in them, much to my surprise, and have had honestly lost some of my preconception that i shouldn't wear a "real" wedding dress.....

its your wedding, have what you both want, and if you are happy your friends and family will be delighted for you

    Smiley smile

Thanks everyone 4 your replies. Think I will go for the "real" wedding dress - the Monsoon ones look great - as long as it's not a "meringue" and not pure white but cream/ivory, I think I can get away with it! Will send photos when I've chosen! Many thanks for all the ideas and encouragement. Think I'm going to like it here - so far, I seem to be the oldest bride - any advance on 60? ?

Welcome to Hitched! I've nothing much to add and agree with everyone else, have what YOU want for your day. My mother said at 36 I was too old for a wedding dress and veil. I'll show her!!! Can't wait to see how your plans come together Smiley smile

I went to a wedding at the weekend where the bride was FMIL's sister who's around the 50 mark. She wore a simple but very elegant ivory bridal gown and she looked amazing. The ceremony was very intimate consisting of about 16 people, family only, followed by the same group of people at the very relaxed 3 hour long wedding breakfast. The evening reception was a proper knees up and about another 80 people came. Their children (grown up) were involved - bride's son did a reading during the ceremony and daughter did the main speech at the reception, groom's daughter was a witness. It was very laidback and personal and it was a brilliant day.

Do what suits you and your family, having no preconceptions is good, just go with the flow and see what takes your fancy.

    Oh, and congratulations!

    Congratulations on your engagement!

My mum is getting married next June - she'll be 57. She's chosen an ivory tea length 50s style wedding dress. I would say she's a fairly 'young' 57 though so I suppose it all depends on your style and how you feel!

There are no rules about what you can and can't do/have these days and don't let anyone tell you otherwise :-)

    Good luck with the planning.

    Congratulations to you both!

I photographer an 'older' couple last year, both in their 50s. They had been together for most of their lives and had grown up kids etc but had never been married. The bride opted for the full white wedding and it was marvellous! I really wouldn't worry about what you think other people might think... just find a dress that you love and plan the wedding you want. The day is all about the pair of you after all and your guests will just be happy to see you enjoying it.

    All the best Smiley smile

Congratulations! This is a very exciting time for you and I would do what you want to do for your wedding and not go by what friends and family might say. You can wear whatever dress you want and do it however you want budget permitting. I got married in March this year. I'm 50 in a week's time! It was me and my husband's 2nd wedding and we had an intimate do for about 50 people at a hotel with another 20 or so for the evening do. This is a pic of me and he.? I think we look really good for being oldies!

Congratulations, the lady who is making my dress has just done a stunning dress for a lady who had a vow renewal for an anniversary! It was ivory still but more glamourous than princessy!
