Are expensive shampoos etc worth it?

Lady Falafel, 9 April, 2008 at 10:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 42

Or is it all a big con like skin care?

My hairdresser was appalled that I use some high street shampoo & conditioner on my hair (elvive I think) but in the next breathe tried to sell me her own super delux stuff, so I naturally assumed it was bollox. My hair has been much more silky though and I didn't need to wash my hair until today (so 4 days instead of the usual 2)

Are the expensive ones really that much different?

Just recently I have taken really greasy hair and have tried just about everything on the shelf in Boots but decided to pay a little more and order some Aveda shampoo and I will never look back! It's fab stuff.

ps - I also have to say I pay a little extra for Temple Spa skincare and my skin has never been so good so I also think that is worth it!id="size1">

I have some Federic Fekkai (sp) glossing shampoo and conditioner and I find it very good but will only use it maybe once or twice a week - if I'm going out somewhere or something.

Usually I use highstreet stuff and wash my hair every day.

Is this Aveda stuff really good then? My hair gets so greasy, especially in my sleep that I have to wash it every day if I'm leaving the house!

I do find the Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner well worth the money, but that's the only 'brand' I'd pay for really. The others are much of a sameness for me.

I know a lot of girls on here rave abuot the Keratese [sp] brand?

I don't think I've every tried a really expensive one, but I know that the really cheap ones don't work for my hair (it just goes very frizzy).

I tend to alternate between Dove and the John Frieda ones.

Yes, absolutely worth it. Long term it doesn't actually cost that much more than High Street brands because you don't have to wash your hair as often.

I reckon she was just trying to sell you her products - Kerastase is the big range that most hairdressers tend to recommend, and that's made by L'Oreal the same as Elvive.

However, I have heard good things about Paul Mitchell products but I'm not sure why?

I've spent £35 on matching shampoo and conditioner before (Bumble&bumble, Aveda, Frederick Fekkai) but TBH they didn't make a hayuge difference. I actually found the Aveda one didn't clean my hair brilliantly. I tend to go for the 'good' ones in Boots and save my pennies!

    But wow, 4 days!?

I use normal shampoo but Paul Mitchell conditioner. A high Street bottle (say at £1.50) would last me about a week, two tops. My current bottle of PM conditioner (£12.50) I bought in November and I still have 1/3 of a bottle left - so it actually works out cheaper, and my hair is in much better condition and needs cutting less often

I found Bumble and Bumble shampoos ok though their thickening spray is quite good. I got my haircut in Bumble and Bumble and found it very good for that

I love how my hair feels when I use Molton Brown shampoo and I can get an extra day out of it but at £15 a bottle, it's just too much! ? I use John Freida's Brilliant Brunnette 90% of the time and I'm happy with that, I can cope with £4 a bottle on 3 for 2 in boots!

I sometimes use Mr M's Herbal Essence at night if I'm having a bath and want to quickly wash my hair but it doesn't feel lovely and gets manky much quicker.

I think they are. I tend to have three or four on the go and never use the same one two washes in a row. I use a chespy one as well as expensive. The very best I've found is lucinda ellery.

Its something I've never tried, although I do tend to err on the side of 'premium' brands in Boots or whatever.

At the minute, its one thing I just cannot justify the cost of. I'll see what happens when I garduate and actually earning pennies and things.

I use Unberto Gianinni shampoo and conditioner. It's not much more expensive than high street brands but it makes my hair feel so much better and it lasts a hell of a lot longer too. With other brands like fructis I have to wash my hair every day and a bottle only lasted 1 -2 weeks, this stuff lasts me a month so I'm probably saving money.

Absolutely worth it, I have exceptionally frizzy hair (stoopid Irish Genes) and My MIL bought me alterna hemp shampop & conditioner & it's absolutely fantastic, far superior to Aveda & bumble & bumble IMO.

I have been reading articles on moneysavingexpert about just washing using cheap conditioner - the ones without silicon products, especially if you have frizzy hair. If I could find some non-silicon conditioner here I would give it a go!

Interesting, thanks, so might not just be an indulgent luxury after all. I'll have a look & see what other options there are then. Might have a look a MSE and see what they say too.

OOh pretty things for me ?

I dunno, I think it just depends on the expensive brand you're talking about.

I was bought some TIGI shampoo and conditioner for dark hair as a christmas present, it was labelled at the hairdressers yesterday as being £12 a bottle, it's so not worth that, it's cr@p and leaves my hair feeling quite dry.

    I'd rather use Brilliant Brunette.

I recently bought the Toni and Guy "catwalk" curls rock shamoo and conditioner as it was on sale in TJ Hughes for £10 a bottle (750ml size).

I love the shapoo, its much richer than the other curly hair shampoos Ihave tried (tend to buy the Nicky Clarke one when its on a BOGOF deal!!!).

Although ihave to say the conditioner was not as good as iwas expecting it too be. Its nice and thick with a lovely smell but I would not pay full price for it (would the shampoo though).

Which reminds me to get down to TJ Hughes and stock up while they are still selling it!!!!

I have been using kerastase for the past year now and it has made such a difference to my hair I will never go back to the high street brands.

I have quite greasy roots but very dry split ends and have found the specifique range really good for that. It is about £10 a bottle (much cheaper if you buy online than from a salon) and it lasts probably about 2 months...as you don't need to use much and also you don't need to wash your hair so often ..iyswim.

Interesting, just looking at that range and they do one for thinning hair, something my friend is having a problem with at the moment. I might treat her to some - see if it helps ?

Yes, they definitely are worth it.

I've recently been using some Wella SP (salon product) shampoo and conditioner and have noticed my hair gets less greasy than normal. I also use the Paul Mitchell super skinny serum which is supposed to help keep hair flat shiny and reduce drying time. Not sure how much of those it really does, but it smells SO good! ? (kind of a sweet fruity apple smell)

Looking forward to my appointment on Saturday so I can stock up on new goodies! ?

It's all relative to your own hair I suppose but I've been using Aveda Shampure for 3 years and would never change. I used to have itchy scalp, greasy roots and dry ends. I've also got sensitive skin and shampoos/conditioners would bring out a reaction on my whole body from when it runs off in the shower. I don't have any of these problems now and my hair is in lovely condition and shiny too.

A litre bottle costs £24 and lasts us just under a year because you don't need to use two applications like many high street brands. If a hairdresser tries to recommend the salon's brand, I tell them I use Aveda. More often than not they say "Oooh I love Aveda"! ?

Aveda is made by the same people as the clinique shampoo so I'm told.
I tried J's stepmums aveda, and it's fabulous stuff
I'm definitely going to buy some when I remember (and I have the ££)

I'm a tightwad and since I need to wash my hair everyday I just use Head and Shoulders Citrus. My hair started to get really greasy last year (after stopping the pill) and now I look like a chip pan every morning?

Can you get trial sizes of this Aveda stuff?

Good question. I bought L'Anza stuff a while back and whilst the conditioner was good the shampoo was cr@p and it wasn't cheap.

Why don't you check the official Aveda website?

The bigger salons tend to have a stand with 50ml sample sizes. I also use their day moisturiser which is great. Light, non-greasy and perfume free.
Sample sizes are often on fleabay too because QVC sell Aveda and you get packs with trial sizes in.

I go to an Aveda salon for a haircut and I've always been given lots of samples. If you have an Aveda salon or counter nearby, then they should be OK to give them out?

Back to the original question, for me more expensive stuff definitely works. I'm using a stupidly expensive brand called Lazartique that's only available in a few stores in London, but my hair is so much better after using it, and my mum, who used to have hair thinning problem, has got hers fixed after using that range. Ultimately though it's to do with your hair type and what suits it.

I use middle range John Frieda "blonde" stuff. I think its about £4-5 a bottle, but its really lovely.

Molton Brown is heaven but very expensive, so only get it for Christmas and Birthdays etc.

I will second this as I have currently got TIGI Bedhead on the go and I will never buy it again, it cost me about £25 for the two and my hair feels very dry too. Aussie 3 minute miracle beats it hands down!

I really do fancy trying out the tubs of shampoo and conditioner by Philosophy, can't remember the actual name(they smell like lemon meringue pie ?), but at £30 for the two I think I will wait to we go to America later in the year as it is so much cheaper.

I use Aussie and Aveda conditioners and they are fab. I have long hair and blow dry/straighten it every other day and my hairdresser always comments on what good condition my hair is in, despite me only getting it cut every six months or so.

I've used Kerastase for about 7 years now. I tried going back to cheap conditioner but you have to use so much, and it's not nearly as good.

It's a bit like comparing Fairy liquid to Happy Shopper washing up liquid IMHO. Falso economy as you have to use so much more cheap stuff and the result isn't as good.

Is skincare a con then? I look after my skin and always put my youthful looks down to this ?
