Are you allowed mobile phones on in hospital wards?

KB3, 30 April, 2009 at 09:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Forgive me for being cynical but we've heard so many lies from the ex over the years I take everything she says / does with a pinch of salt.

She's told the girls she is in hospital and can be reached at all times on her mobile. She's been texting frequently throughout the day and eldest called her mobile last night and they had a chat.

So, are you allowed mobile phones on hospital wards?

Depends on the ward - sometimes yes, (on the Surgical ward I was on last year, you were allowed to use them providing you were considerate about it and had them set to silent).

And then you have the people who don't give a toss about the rules and use them anyway.

The general and official rule is no but unless there are patients hooked up to lots of monitors, most wards allow it. One time when I was in for a week, we were asked not to use our phones for a day after a lady came back from theatre.

When I worked in a hospital, we were told we could use our phones in all corridors and non-clinical areas with discression.

The ward I was in last month even let people charge their phones on the ward, I hadn't seen that before! ?

When I was in an orthopaedic ward just after Christmas I was allowed my mobile. I didn't really make calls and only received a few, but it was no problem to do so, and I used text as much as I liked. I was in a sideroom so I don't know if that made any difference.

I have heard that some wards allow you to use mobiles. However, if I were in your situation I would consider putting in a phonecall (on behalf of the kids) to the hospital itself to see if she is there/how she is... Maybe.

Officially you're not supposed to use them in the hospital I work in but everyone does and it would be rare that anyone was asked to stop using theirs.
