Argh! Friends with poor grammar

Stelly, 3 September, 2008 at 21:52 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I just looked at my friend's wedding invitation and the RSVP date is "the 22th of September"

22th????!!!! How can you miss something like that? How can you read it through to yourself and say "um hm, 22ndth of September is perfect"...

Another friend emailed me and told me we "where missed this weekend". On her wedding website she has a photo of the tree under which her bloke proposed, and the caption says "under the tree were the brides parent where married". Am so tempted to email her with corrections.

Maybe it's the US education system that's to blame? Are British people our age so useless?

    Oh dear.

The newsletters that come from school here are always filled with bad grammar. I've been so tempted to highlight the mistakes and post it back. You'd think coming from a school it would be perfect!

Oh no. We regularly have notices posted around the office with grammar mistakes in them - I have to fight the urge not to take a large red marker pen to them..................

Every single email or letter from every one of my in-laws is riddled with there/their/they're and where/were/we're mistakes. Also there is not much use of proper or useful punctuation. It makes for really hard reading.

On an email, I could 'almost' understand, if you're not particularly pc literate or know your way round a keyboard, but surely people know how to write a letter? No?

My husband's grammar is awful and I notice lots of hand written signs with shocking spelling and grammar. So no, it's not an American thing!

I cannot abide bad grammar and bad spelling.

My ILs always say, "Can you learn me to do something?" instead of "Can you teach me to do something?"

They also say, "Can you remember me to do something?" instead of "Can you remind me to do something?"

I'm hoping my daughter doesn't use learn/teach and remember/remind wrongly.

Sadly it's not only an American thing. My husband's grammar is bad too but I've given up correcting him.

I'm not sure if some of his 'sayings' are because he was originally from 'ooop North' and then lived in Devon! In answer to me saying 'I was.......' he says 'Was you?' and it drives me mad!
