Argos rings?

MrsLtobe, 22 January, 2012 at 09:18 Posted on Planning 0 34

Hey all

We're on a VERY limited budget and didnt' realise how much wedding rings were! We decided to go to Argos and have a look, I've chosen a £69 one that will fit with my ER and OH has chosen a £112 one that he's going to wear on a chain, we've looked at other jewellers, but we just can't afford £200-£300 each for a ring! My ER is from Argos too. Problem is when people ask where I'm getting them and I say Argos, they turn their nose up and make me feel about an inch big! Is anyone else getting them here? Is it weird?

Argos tended to have a reputation from their Elizabeth Duke days for sovereign rings and clown pendants.

I have seen some of their jewellery and it looks no different to H Samuel and sometimes Ernest Jones (mine are from there) to the untrained eye. Ignore the nosey people turning their noses up at least you are paying for your own rings without getting into debt.

If it makes you feel better you could lie, nobody would know but you shouldn't have too.

It wouldn't be my choice. What type of metal will it be?

Remember this thing will be on your finger every day for the rest of your life. Could you not reduce costs elsewhere to afford a slightly nicer ring?

I don't think it matters where the ring comes from as long as you like it and you can afford it, At the end of the day an 18ct ring from Argos will be no different in gold to a 18ct plain ring from Tiffanys!

It's the same as some people pay 25k for a wedding and others pay 3k do the couple still have the day of there lives YES! Sorry it's a bit of a rant but why is it all about cost!

I don't understand why people have such a problem with rings from Argos. It doesn't matter how much it costs, its what it represents.

I have thought and looked at rings from Argos, although I am unsure on having a Wedding ring at all, but haven't completely decided yet!

Do what you want to do and can afford to do.Don't let other peoples views get to you!

It'll be white gold, I don't see the point in paying a few hundred more for a ring that looks exactly the same, my ER is absolutely beautiful and from Argos, maybe it's the stigma of where it came from, rings from H Samuel look the same in my opinion...

My ER was my nans and is 9ct gold it has lasted 40 years so far, I had the 'didn't he buy you a ring' my answer 'no cause I asked him!'. We only have a budget at the moment of £200 for both wedding rings, so will also be looking at Argo's. If I had the money then I would look at making my own.

Friends of mine who got married in October got their rings from there - they looked the same as rings from everywhere else so I wouldn't worry about it. We also have a very limited budget so we might end up going down this route. Did you have a look on smooch - their prices seem quite reasonable.

You could always get an Argos one now and later - anniversary or something upgrade. Wedding rings are supposedly for life but ring sizes do change - my mum had to had hers cut off as her fingers were swollen and she had it replaced by something else.

At the end of the day as long as you're happy with it - does it really matter (though who honestly wouldn't like something from Tiffanys?)

Me - but I find it overrated.

I'd say go for it. As others have said, an 18ct white gold ring from there will be the same as anywhere else. If anyone asks you could always say you got it from a specialist online retailer or something. I agree with Jo, not that you should have to though.

Have you tried independent jewellers though? That's where we got my ER and we are getting our wedding rings from. You could save costs by getting yourself a white gold rings and your OH a titanium or tungsten carbide or similar?

It's not about what shop it's from it's about the quality of the ring, I think argos have a reputation for more cheap mixed metal jewellery but I'm not sure of how true that is these days.. So long as you are comfotable in your choice then who cares what anyone else thinks? And if the responses are getting to you then simply don't tell people the truth, just say you got them from an independant jeweller or something along those lines.

It does not matter what shop they come from, as long as you are happy with them.

We are on a budget too (purely by choice as we agreed not to spend a fortune and get ourselves into debt over our wedding), and so we looked at Argos too. I have to say i wasnt very impressed so we took ourselves off to H Samuel and got both our rings for £150 together!

I just got a plain white gold band, which i wanted as i cant wear anything patterned/stoned at work, and OH got a Titanium band which is cracking and he loves it!

Might be worth a look about if your not happy...

I have looked at argos too! I dont see any difference whatsoever in where they are from. I saw some lovely ones in warren James window yesterday white gold and diamonds for half the price of other shops.

I have had lots of girls compare there engagment rings to mine saying how lovely and expensive it looks compared to theres..............it was £150 from H samuel and theirs was ......, well a lot more! I would never be able to tell the difference.

I don't understand why people think it's ok to ask you where your rings are from! Tell them to mind their own business, it's nothing to do with them.

What does it matter gold is gold wherever it is from. I had a thick 9ct gold very ornate ring for my wedding but found after a few months that I couldn't wear it as it made my finger go white, so we had to buy another very narrow 18ct one from somewhere like, samuels can't remember now as it was 18 years ago but it doesn't feel as if it wasn't the one I got married with

I worked at Argos for about 6 years as a student, and we never had any wedding bands returned. They are just as good quality as other high street shops, as it was mentioned earlier there is just a stigma attached to the store because of the 'Mum' rings etc.

    I'd go for it!

I agree, if its what you want then go for it. If it says 9ct gold then it will be 9ct gold just like other shops, just because its called 'argos' doesnt mean its any different and if your not keen on peoples responses tell a white lie, not looked properly for rings yet but have nosyed at a few places including argos, h samuel and other made ones ive found at wedding fayres. x

Kharv- I wish I could say that I find Tiffany overrrated but as I have never been lucky enough to get anything from there and probably never will it's just the whole glamour of it all.

If someone put an Argos ring in a Tiffany box- would I know the difference - probably not.

I don't think it matters where they are from...we found the exact same ring in gold smiths for £249 and in H.Samuels for £159 ... personally i wouldn't ask where someone got their rings from unless i was asking for advice! Smiley smile x

It's about what the rings represent - not how much they cost. Our rings are both family heirlooms My OH was worried that people would think he was trying to do things on the cheap , but to me the sentiment of being able to wear my OH grans ring and pass it on to our children is worth more than any ring money could buy.

That said as he saved on our engagement and wedding rings I'll be expecting one hell of an eternity ring ?

AmyWilson - I'm getting married on the 22nd September, it was going to be 2013 but with a little help from mum and her saying if she paid for the reception package would we move it to this year it move forward 13 months !

OH thought that I wanted a Tiffany ring (sorry but I do have a necklass from there which I got a long time ago) hence why he had not asked, I had my nan's ring in a box that I loved so I had it resized and bought him a £20 ring and I proposed. To be honest Tiffany are all about the diamonds cut and clarity. So if you are going to spend that sort of money fine, but if you are working to a budget I have better things to spend it on. The most inportant thing to me is I'm marrying the man of my life ring or no ring !

    Sorry for nicking the thread!

Totally agree with the other comments. We bought ours from Argos as OH doesn't really care for jewellery and just wanted to get the shopping experience over with. I hav a reputation of losing or breaking my jewellery so I wasn't going to risk buying an expensive one (Although my ER is expensive and I am VERY careful with it!). The gold is the same no matter where you buy it. We did look at other jewellers but found the rings we like at Argos for less than at the jewellers and I don't care enough to worry about where it comes from. Don't let people make you feel bad its your ring and therefore up to you!

Like everyone has already said, who cares where it's from?!

My ER was from HPJ and cost £70 but who cares - it's GORGEOUS and totally me (white gold with white and black diamonds!) and I'd already said to my OH that I'd be too scared to wear anything too expensive as i NEVER wear jewellery as I always lose it!!

I also have looked at getting our wedding rings from Argos. I looked in November last year and we chose 2 that we liked and they were £64.99 each which was great for us as we havent got a big budget. I have looked again in the last week as we decided to buy them now and they have gone up to £89.99! I cant believe they have gone up so much in 2 months Smiley sad wish we had got them last year now!!

I would tell a little white lie if it will make you feel better on the big day Smiley smile

My ER and WR are both from Argos, mainly due to budget but I love them and had so many compliments, particularly on my WR. Similar to a previous reply, I worked at Argos for 5 years and my mum did for 14 years, and I think the only problems I ever recall with WRs were that they had been purchased in the wrong size. I'm even more impressed with my WR now as it's double the price it was when I got it 18 months ago! Plenty of people buy their rings from Argos, I'm not sure why it's looked down on but it's nobody's business but yours in the long run - lie or just don't answer if you're asked!

I have never been asked where my rings are from and if I had been, I would tell them to mind their own!

An Argos ring doesn't come with Elizabeth Duke stamped around it, no-one will know unless you tell them.
