Arrgghhhhh - done something really stupid (cheque related)

Hugo Brambles, 11 November, 2008 at 17:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

A client left me a cheque today with the payee left blank. I've just meant to write my name on the cheque and customers name in my paying in book and because I'm rushing I've got them the wrong way round. If I scribble out the customers name and put my name in will it work or will they reject it?

I think they'll most likely reject it - sorry.

Doh! It means I've got to give it back to the client and ask for another one (and look like a jackass lol!)

To be honest, I'd be quite surprised if they accepted a cheque where the name was written in a different handwriting to the rest of the cheque. I know they should reject cheques where the amount is in a different handwriting (of course, that's if they actually look at it, which is probably rare).

happens all the time - i ts never been a problem to me, ever. plus, banks rarely even look at cheques when the amount is under 5 grand anyway.

Really? Most clients leave the payee blank for me to fill in and I've never had a problem with them accepting them in my writing?

I would definitely return the cheque to the client and ask for a new one. You'll feel like a dick, yes, but there's a very good chance the bank will reject it (they certainly should) which will mean that the client finds out anyway and, at worst, it could look like you had tried to do something dodgy (not sure how, but I would certainly feel suspicious if someone fiddled with one of my cheques, even if I wasn't sure what to feel suspicious about, IYSWIM ?) Better to look like a dick than a crook.

This is interesting as sometimes I have taken cheques with no payee filled in to the bank and they just hand them back for me to fill that bit out. I take in cheques all the time where I have filled in the payee, quite often in a different colour, never mind different hand writing, to the payee

I always do this for my husband's work cheques. In fact last week I paid a work cheque made out to his business name into our private (personal name) account. I called the bank when I realised the error and they admitted they never look at cheques under £1000. I was quite shocked, but thankful as we needed the cheque to clear.
