Asthma - Gone away without inhalers.

Mrs Jellybaby1977, 21 February, 2009 at 22:32 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

I am such a muppet. I have come away without my inhalers. My breathing is quite bad at the moment so am even more of a muppett for not realising I did not have them.

I'm working away and I'm 4 hours from home and not due back until Tuesday night - I'm not sure how I'll cope tbh.

I've just called NHS Direct and they have suggested a walk in centre - which on further investigation does not seem to exist.

Do you think a pharmacy will give me one without a perscription?

Not sure what else to do - trying to stay calm so breathing does not get worse though not managing that so far.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Sx

Oh poor you! Can your doctor make up a prescription and fax it through to a nearby pharmacy?

I've had an emergency like this before and gone to Boots (any pharmacy will do). They let me have a ventolin and just paid the prescription price. I had to post a prescription to them but that wasn't an issue. A walk-in centre would be just as good. Try not to get too worried, that will make you worse, just breathe as slowly and easily as you can (easier said than done I know.....).

Where are you based at the moment? If I'm close I can bring you one?

I'd have thought you need to see a GP. If you're struggling now then you'll have to get in touch with teh out of hours GP - NHS Direct should be able to tell you who that is.

I would call NHS direct back and ask where the walk in centre is or can they get you an out of hours GP appt. Hope you are ok x

Failing NHS direct passing you on to the doctor, you could google for a local surgery and see if they list the out of hours number, or phone them as they all usually have a recording with the out of hours number on.

I did this when I went to Cornwall once, I was nearly hospitalised on my return (only thing that stopped the GP calling me a cab was I had my 9 month old with me!). I did manage to buy to my inhaler over the counter in boots but I was too wheezy for it to be effective enough. Go to your nearest pharmacy asap and even if they won't let you buy it for prescription price then it shouldn't be hugely expensive, I think mine was around £12.

    xx

Hope your ok, if you still can't get an inhaler go to A&E. I saw a lots adults and parents who forgot to take various meds with them while away from home when doing my training. At this time of night I doubt anywalk in clinis will be open and GPs will be hard to come by.

Actually, Rhea speaks a lot of sense. It's late and there won't be many places open. If you're in any doubt at all, go to A&E. Hope you're OK

Where are youy? Chemists will be open with emergency hours tomorrow, and will give you an inhaler. Their use is more common than we imagine so if you are in a hotel ask at the desk and I bet one of the staff has one.

I am sure you are sorted by now but I've purchased them from chemists before. Once I paid for one and once I sent a prescription.

Just be thankful you don't live with my husband or not only would you be feeling unwell but you'd have to endure an hour long lecture on the dangers of asthma ?

Hope you are ok. I went away without my inhalers last summer and as soon as I realised I had forgotten them, I began wheezing like mad. H took me to a local chemist and they let me buy one but I think your best bet on a Sunday would be a&e. Take care.

I used to work in a chemist a few years back and we definalty sold inhalers as an emergency supply for the price of a prescription. the pharmacist just had to take down all your contact details, and gps details. Hope you have got one sorted out and are okay x

One quick fix....if possible is to go to a fridge and breathe in the air around the freezer section......that has worked for me in the past.

I know that life without an inhaler with you can be worrying....I am a light sufferer and really feel for those that have it worse.

Just wanted to say a belated to thanks to everyone who responded.

I slept with the window open which helped - though H did say my breathing at times sounded like a cat was in the room!

I then went to the local Tesco which had a pharmacy and they were great. They gave me an emergancy ventalin inhaler and said if I could remember the others to come back. Brilliant service and from the moment the lovely lady said she could help me my breathing went back to normal.

Thanks again for the responses and sorry for the slow response.

    Sx
