At my wit's end - snoring

spacecadet_99, 15 October, 2008 at 05:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I'm on the sofa with my pillows and a quilt, but too awake now to sleep. Since MrSC got back from Yeovil last Thursday night I don't think I've had a fully uninterrupted night's sleep. He has always snored periodically when he's over tired, got a cold or drunk. Well he's had this cold for all that time and tonight has been the worse yet. He just doesn't seem willing to do anything about it = he was using a nasal spray the first few nights, never early enough (should be about half an hour before bed) but has stopped becuase he doesn't think it was doing anything. He hasn't taken any cold and flu medication, or even some tissues so he can blow his nose so the snoring is interspersed with sniffing. I've just spent 10 mins crying on the toilet becuase I seriously couldn't cope any more - when I went back to bed he asked what was wrong and his response was 'well sleep on the sofa then'. So here I am.

Luckily we should be getting a spare mattress tomorrow so at least I'll have somewhere better than the sofa. He's getting up in less than an hour so I will go back to bed for an hour's sleep then, if that'll help.

Not sure what the point of this was other than to vent, sorry!

Hope you managed to get some sleep!! He could ask his Dentist about an anti-snoring device. http://www.silensor.co.uk/index.htm these are the ones we make for our patients and have had really good results. HTH

I think it's pretty normal to snore with a cold - although it must be tiring for you I'm not sure what he can do really. I don't think cold and flu medication will really help as that's mainly paracetamol for bringing down the fever, isn't it? It just has to run its course. Maybe a decongestant would help, though, or earplugs for you? Many types are quite comfortable (I use the foam ones when H snores).

I sympathise and have spent a few nights on the sofa/in spare room.

Ultimately, losing weight worked for my H. He did try those things you stick over the bridge of your nose (50% success) and the drops you put in water and gurgle (50% success)

I'd be telling him to sleep on the sofa (although I never did, I ended up cryig on the sofa)

Thanks all, I feel a bit better now that it's actually time to be awake although I think I'll need a coupla cans of diet coke to keep me going at work. I think losing weight is definitely an option, I might get him to look for earplugs when he goes to the shop this evening as well. I've sent him off to work with loads of drugs so hopefully they will damp down his symptoms a bit.

Things seem so awful at 4am though don't they?!

You have my greatest sympathies - my H2B snores terribly and has nasal spray form his ENT consultant which helps a little. Unfortunately he often forgets to get a repeat prescription so I now use ear plugs most nights. (I would recommend some industrial strength rubber ones rather than the cheap foam ones from Boots!) I got mine from Ebay for a couple of quid.

I would second the earplugs recommendation, on the rare occasions that I'm woken up by H snoring and can't get back to sleep, I'll go and get some cotton wool, rip it up and roll into balls and stick them in my ears. Does the trick.

My H has one of these and they are good and really do work, he got his on the NHS but it did take a while. I think they cost about £200 normally, but worth it if he is a persistent snorer!
