Aunties and Uncles

Flaming Nora, 19 June, 2008 at 19:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

When do you stop calling aunties and uncles, auntie and uncle and start calling them by their first name only?

I'm not really in contact with my aunts or uncles so generally call them by their first name, but all my nieces and nephews only ever refer to me as auntie Nora. It would seem mighty odd for them not to. My eldest nephew is 17 now and I'm sure its bad for his street cred for me to ring him on his mobile and say "Hiya, its auntie Nora" ?. I'm sure he was mortified as at the end of the call he said, "Bye then erm Nora". ?

What do you call yours? and what do your neices and nephews call you?

I'm 27 and still call mine auntie and uncle. It seems wrong not to, although one of my aunties hates it and corrects me everytime but I can't not do it (she thinks it makes her sound old now I'm all grown up ?)

I don't have any neices or nephews ☹️

I call them both tbh, one of my aunty's I've only ever called by her first name though but I don't speak to them so it doesn't really matter!

My 26year old cousin still calls my step dad uncle mike, it's quite funny

Ooh. er. I don't have that may in this country, the one I do I think I call her 'Tante' (dutch) in a sort of ironic way, and a sort of to give her a title for my little ones.

Thinking about it i've called my aunt and uncle by their first names since about the age of 16/17. My lovely aunt (now sadly deceased) Rhona insisted that i call her "Rhona" and not aunty any more cos it was making her feel old!!

Aww WT, do you wish you did or not?

My aunties/uncles are so distant that we've never, ever been close but (thankfully) its different with my nieces and nephews. I think I like having them in my life, knowing that I'll never have children of my own.

I've always said I really want to be an aunty but I have no strong feelings about being a mum. I think I'd make a good aunty ?

I dunno Nora, Ive never had them so dont miss them! I had a great aunt and uncle (my grans only sister, and only grandparent to have a sibling) and I have a handful of 2nd, 3rd and 4th cousins, but thats it.

Thats what happens when you come from a family of only children!

Im not into children so nieces and nephews arent something I particularly want anyway.

All thats left of my immediate family is me, my mum and my paternal granny. thats it.

I totally get that. When my sisters began having their family it was almost expected that I would dote on them and want to share in their upbringing but to be honest, it was all a bit much for me. I don't want children, and whilst I don't dislike them, I do find them hard company ?.

Now they are all a bit older, its much easier for me. I get on so much better with young teens.

PHB, the good thing about being an auntie is that you generally only get the fun stuff. The biggest downside is they still cost a bloody fortune ? My dog is so cheap in comparison ?

I don't ever remember calling them Auntie so-and-so, always by their first name. In fact, I don't remember any of my cousins doing it either, always by first name only.

My nephews call me Auntie Lorna, which is nice - except I'm not Lorna. That's their other auntie. I'm Auntie Laura. They're only little though and they do see her more than me, and our names are similar. They used to call Mr Chunk 'Auntie Gareth' too, again because they see Lorna more so thought that everyone was an auntie.

Now I've typed Auntie so much, I'm convined it is wrong.

I'm 26 this year and refer to my auntie and uncles my their first names. I don't know when i stopped calling them auntie or uncle. My nephew calls me x, but my sister refers to me aunty x.

My cousin calls my dad uncle X, which for some reason annoys me. She's 22 this year.

I guess it's a family by family thing. No-one in my parent's families ever uses just first names for Aunties and Uncles, wheras H's family never use the names Aunty and Uncle. When I was younger even my friends parents were aunty and uncle although that stopped when I reached secondary school.

I'm struggling to call my Great Uncle by his first name after he recently decided that it was rediculous that even my 62 year old Dad still calls him "Uncle".

H has an aunty who's 2 years older than him and more like a sister to him. He thinks it's funny to send her cards designed for OAP's with things like "to a beloved Aunty" on them.

I think I stopped sometime in my 20s. It wasn't a conscious thing, it just sort of happened.

I stopped using aunt and uncle when I was early 20's I think. Mum looked at me a little odd a couple of times but nothing was ever said. I have a 9 year old nephew and he calls me by my first name - I spent ages telling him it was aunty first. By the time he gets the hang of it, I'll be telling him to drop it.

H has 6 nephews and nieces - aged 17-21. At our wedding we sat them all at the same table in front of the top table and they spend the whole meal shouting Aunty Karen ?
