Autumn days when the grass is jeweled...

Pookiedoodle, 12 April, 2008 at 18:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 63

...and the silk inside a chestnut shell ? <- That's me singing along if you can imagine that!

I was just chatting with my children about assembly, which reminded me of my childhood assemblies, singing from my Come And Praise book - it was blue with boys singing faces on the front.
Did you have these too??

All those things that I mustn't forgeeeeeeeeeet, no I mustn't forgeeeeeeeeet, to say a great big thank you I mustn't forgeeeeeeeet.

Oh yes, we had those books. My primary school had 40 pupils in total (covering all ages from 4 to 12). Our school cook used to come out and play the piano while we sang along. That was one of my favourites.

Wahaaaay, I'm so glad some of you remember!!
My fave was song number 72, the last in the book...

Every word comes alive, when it's written or read,
There is life in a word, when it's sung or said.....

    ?<- She's off again!

We had that song but we didn't have the books, we had ours on an acetate sheet projected onto the wall for us all to read, obviously cheaper than buying lots of copies of the books!
Our favourites along with that one was one that went...
Sing Hosanna, sing hosanna, sing hosanna to the king of kings, and each time the person would add an extra 'of kings' on the last verse!

I used to like that book. We had another one as well with Lord of the Dance in but I don't know what that one was called as my memory is telling me it was covered. The music book for come and praise was a burnt orange sort of colour!

That line used to confuse me so much as a 7 year old - what did I know about in flight refuelling?!

    Here's another:

There are hundreds of sparrows, thousands millions -
They're one a penny far too many there must be.
There are hundreds of sparrows, thousands millions -
But god loves everyone and god loves me.

Nothing like a bit of indoctrination - but I did love singing them!?

I had Come and Praise but I think it was blue with people singing on the front. One of the people was wearing a uniform like ours and everyone used to say that our school had made them specially ?

I remember "Carpenter carpenter make me a tree" and "one more step along the world I go" and something about turning the world upside down? ?

We had the same as Nicola so didn;t have any books. I liked:

I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony....

And there was a song with my surname in and I hated it when we sang it as everyone used to take the piss out of me mid way through the song.

    Much fun!

OMG. Singing along now...something to do with the smell of apple pies too and "no I mustn't forget...no I mustn't forget.." oh dear. I am singing, its not good.

Also had "with cheerful voice" hymn books (green kind of stripy books if I remember correctly?" - sorry haven't read whole thread so someone may have already beaten me to it.

Annoying tho...bet I will be humming that all night ?

was that book also responsible for "would you walk by on the other side" too?

When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old, he was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold.

I am singing along just reading this thread.

I used to be allowed to play my recorder (a treble, not just a boring descant, oh no ?) and stand next to the piano and everything, there were about 4 of us, bet we sounded awful.

Anyone else has the plastic-y vinyl-y covered orange hymn books with the orange circle/sun on? They may have been called Morning Has Broken.
They certainly had Morning Has Broken in...

Morning has bro---------ken, like the first morning,
Blackbird has spo---------ken, Like the first bird,
Praise for the sing---------ing, praise for the morning
Praise for them spring--------ing fresh from the word.

    Aaaaaah, memories ?

Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk inside a chestnut shell.
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All the things I love so well.
    So I mustn#%92t forget…
    No I mustn#%92t forget…
To say a great big thank you I mustn#%92t forget.

Clouds that look like familiar faces
And winter's moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings.
    So I mustn't forget...
    No, I mustn't forget...
To say a great big thank you
    No, I mustn't forget.

    Whipped-up spray that is rainbow-scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes so comfy though they're worn out and they're battered
And the taste of apple pie.
    So I mustn't forget...
    No, I mustn't forget...
To say a great big thank you
    No, I mustn't forget.

Scent of gardens when the rain's been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked-up engine that's been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.
    So I mustn't forget...
    No, I mustn't forget...
To say a great big thank you
    No, I mustn't forget.id="size1">

I hate Morning has Broken, even if the words were by Eleanor "cats sleep anywhere" Farjeon. However, I still snigger at the words "wet garden" (wet was a good insult when I was 9) in this hymn and "purple headed mountain" in All Things Bright and Beautiful

    One for the harvest festival:

    "Cauliflowers fluffy and cabbages green,
strawberries sweeter than any I've seen,
    beetroot purple and onions white,
all grow steadily day and night,
    the apples are ripe,
    the plums are red,
the broad beans are sleeping in their blankety bed"

Can't believe I can still remember that all these years on!

When I was young enough to sing ATB&B, I had no idea what a purple headed thing could be - you were an early developer!?

OK, on days when we weren't being indoctrinated in the Christian faith, we had a teacher who would turn us into mini alcoholics - all together now...
