I was just chatting with my children about assembly, which reminded me of my childhood assemblies, singing from my Come And Praise book - it was blue with boys singing faces on the front.
Did you have these too??

We had the With Cheerful voice hymn books too (CofE school so lots of hymnage).

Make me a channel of your peace was my wedding hymn, chosen because me and my mates used to sing it when pissed up (along with Father & SOn, I know him so well and HYmns & arias)?

I'd never heard cauilflower fluffy until Sam went to nursery. He sings it constantly every october.

I had to look up the words, I could only remember the chorus. I knew there was something about learning to fly though ?

They never get sick of Oliver. S likes Oliver songs although he likes to join in now. Just need to get him onto Sound of Music now although Mr I will panic- don't think he likes me to encourage the boy's camp side.

Anyone else has the plastic-y vinyl-y covered orange hymn books with the orange circle/sun on? They may have been called Morning Has Broken.

    id="quote">

    Yes! We had that one!

At my first primary school we didn't have hymn books. They just had the words written out on huuuuuge sheets of paper, and each day they put a new one up at the front of the hall. When i left they were getting all hi-tech and had an OHP with transparencies?

My favourite was one I have never found anywhere else

"On the road that leads to Jerusalem
On the way down to Jericho..."

I love the song Autumn Days and use it everytime I do an assembly at school.

I love the 'so I must'nt forgettttt, no I mustn't forget to sat a great big thank you'

During that bit I always say loudly (to the kids to get them to sing louder)What mustn't you forget? - They love it

    Oh these bring back memories!?

Don't think it would have been in that book, but I also remember singing a song that went:

At quarter past three we go home for tea
Or maybe at quarter to four
And ten pairs of feet go running down the street
And in at their own front door
    There are shouts and laughter
    Clatter and noise
    Brothers and sisters
    Girls and boys
    Baby in the carrycot
    Cat by the stove
    A little bit of quarrelling
    And lots of love!❤️

That make me ? (not sure how accurate the words are but that's vaguely how it went!)

I got into trouble once for refusing to sing certain songs during assembly, my argument was that it was a state/non-secular school and I was an atheist

    I never realised what a smart-arse little git I was as a child ?

I LOVED autumn days when I was at school. I was trying to tell OH about it in church this morning but he says it's not a proper hymn (he's catholic). ?

I also really liked - we are climbing Jesus' ladder ladder,
we are climbing Jesus' ladder ladder,
WE ARE CLIMBING JESUS' LADDER LADDER,
    children of the Lord.

You always had to shout the last line ?

Anyone remember? - 'the ink is black, the page is white
together we learn to read and write, to read and
    write' boop boop boop

Believe it or not we used to sing this in assembly, at primary, I was usually picking my knees!

    Underground, overground, wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind

We still sing Autumn days in assembly now at our school.

    We also sing:

    Colours of day
    Lord of the Dance
Give me oil in my lamp
    When I needed a neighbour
Who put the colours in the rainbow
    All things bright and beautiful
The ink is black, the page is white
He's got the whole world in his hands

    and many others.

When I was around 4 or 5, my parents cruelly made me sing "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam" as my party piece, along with "I'm a little teapot"

    Oh the humiliation! [:I]

I used to play the treble recorder too

The butterfly one - the whole thing has actions whoever was asking!

The carpenter carpenter one - can anyone find the lyrics to that - I'm trying to find them without success.

The ink is black - the ink is black, the page is white, together we learn to read and write - is that right or is that just my memory?

I have the complete come and praise book.

I loved the best gift, peace perfect peace, Think of all the things you lose and colours of day.

In book two, does anyone remember the one about 'sad puzzled eyes of small hungry children?'

I'm not allowed to teach them to the children at my current school as we are multicultural. ☹️!] I'm willing to teach songs for all faiths, but the head won't have it.

Somebody greater than you or me (clap, clap)
put the apple on the apple tree,
the floweres in the earth and the fish in the sea,

Buklder, now raise up a coloured rainbow,

    Deep and wide
    deep and wide
there's a fountain flowing deep and wide

I remember this one along with the actions and also jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.
red and yellow,, black and white, all are precious in his sight, jesus loves the little children of the world.

I can actually smell the sweaty rubber damp smell of school assembly now!

We used to sing that one. One morning we all shouted YES! YES! YES! and got in big trouble[:I]?

And ow I am whistlying the following:

When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,
    He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold;
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
    'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free, with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness the power of the truth.

Oh Wow! So many songs I love! We used to have the orange 'Morning has broken' one, though we also had large sheets of paper and overhaeads over the years!

Now, there is a song that I think I remember singing around mothers day and it bugs me that I can't remember it properly. I think it goes

'and Joseph came from carving wood,
he smiled and saw that life was good
and to the holy mother gave
    a scented rose for Mary'

Does anyone else know this? I went as far as buying Junior Praise off Amazon because of other songs I couldn't remember the words to-H thought I'd gone mad! It was after the Junior church has us all singing 'If I was a butterfly' (with actions) in church one sunday!
