Baking experts-why didn't my sponge cake rise?

sparkletoes, 7 June, 2008 at 16:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

I followed the recipe exactly. I have made cakes before and they have been fine but this is the first time I have used my new oven-could that be it?

My plans for afternoon tea have gone horribly wrong!

Did you mix up plain flour with self raising?

Did you keep opening the door?

    Is the oven defective?

Or more likely, it takes trial and error with new ovens to learn how they work best.

As the obvious thing that has changed is your oven, then I would get an oven thermometer and see how accurate it is. Of course, it could be that your old oven wasn't......

Was def self raising flour (brand new packet from supermarket) and didn't open oven door.

I was lazy and mixed everything in together using electric mixer rather than folding flour in.

Ovens that are strange to you are a mare. I spent a blinking fortune on our new oven and it's worse than the rubbish electric one I had before at cooking cakes.

anyway. turn disaster into triumph, do what I do with non risen sponges, make a trifle. Ideal time, what with all those lovely raspberries and strawberries around!

Did you use fan-assisted or conventional mode?

With my old oven I found that fan-assisted was best for cakes, but with my current one, the opposite. Maybe play around with the functions?

unless you are using the all-in-one method, in which case the whole point is to beat it to hell and back.

It's the oven. I'm still not entirely friends with the one in our new house, and have just spent a week loathing the one in a self-catering cottage. Trial and error to work out what's next, I'm afraid. Fine excuse for lots and lots of cakes, of course ?
