batch recipes and places to but freezer tubs cheaply?

whitetiger, 9 November, 2008 at 09:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Trying to cut down on costs by doing a batch cook and freezing it - so far I have spaghetti bolognaise, autumn soup, stew, curry - any other recipes you could share with me?

Also, if anyone knows where I can get the freezer tubs from I would be most grateful.

Many Thanks in advance xx

I buy the 'tub-its'. I got mine from Asda but Im sure other places do it - not sure if this is the cheapest option though.

You can buy the plastic boxes you get with a chinese/indian takeaway from chinese supermarkets. I bought some from Lakeland but I don't think they do them anymore.

I have a few recipes that I batch cook if you PM me your email address I'll send them to you.

I keep the plastic containers I get takeaways (not that this is any help to you) but when I first started doing it I want to pound streacher (or In store as ours is called) and they sell the foil trays 6 for £1. I still use these for making lasagnes and things that need to be done in the oven.

    HTH?

If you want something more permanent, QVC do great value lock&lock sets. For batch freezing, I put portions in bags, place the bags in a tub and freeze. Once the contents have frozen to the shape of the container, I take them out and just stack the bags in the freezer.

    I also reuse carry-out containers?

Our local pound shop sells plastic tubs with lids that are microwavable and I tend to use those. They mean you can transport the food to work safely as well. They cost £1 for 6 or 8 (depending on size)

I'm about to replace my plastic tubs as I've lost/broken most of mine and Dunelm don't do my old stuff any more. Our takeaway containers are good for freezing individual potions but they are too small for a portion for two. I've had a look around and Lakeland seem to have the best value stuff although I admit I've not tried Asda, it always feels like really hard work going there. ?

Seraphina- brilliant idea re: putting the bags in the box, thanks for the tip.

Forgot to add, I batch cook very basic bolognaise (to turn into either proper rich bolognaise or chilli), vegetable/bean chilli and tomato/roasted red pepper pasta sauce.

How did you make your curry?

They sell the chinese takeaway style ones on the bay of e, i got 25 for about £6 i think

i do go through them though as the lids do break easily, but the sizes are perfect for a portion for two

I freeze mine in plastic bags either sticky top or tie ones. I write the name on the front now after I defrosted chilli instead of bolognaise!

I batch make bolognaise, chilli con carne, lasagne filling, shepherd's pie filling, lamb tagine, tikka masala sauce, meatballs & tomato sauce separately - mainly Delia's recipes on www.deliaonline.com
