Being 18

Iris, 12 June, 2008 at 12:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 110

When I was 18 it was 1993. I wore DMs with everything, stripy tights and horrid hippy style skirts. Grunge was in. We listened to Carter USM, the Wonderstuff and Neds. We didn't have mobiles. Next was seen as the pinacle of style and expense. We used to drink snakebite.

Make me feel old and tell me about when you were 18.

    I'm 20 so my 18th was in 2005.

Does that make you feel old enough? ?

I was 18 in 1988 and my parents took me to a Toby Inn for my birthday which was the height of sophistication in deepest darkest Devon. I worked as a lowly Typist in a Building Society and didn't have a boyfriend - I was still living at home and "saving for my bottom drawer". I drove my parents' beige coloured Mini and bought my clothes from Bennetton. I rolled my jean bottoms up and was in love with Ben from Curiosity Killed The Cat. God I was tragic. ?

1996. I had a figure that I'd kill for now and used to wear tiny skirts and plunging tops with huge heels. We'd be in clubs and bars at the weekend, trying to pull (and usually succeeding although quality wasn't a huge factor ?). All my wages from my Saturday job and pub job went on booze or clothes. Oasis was considered 'splashing the boat out'. I'd worked my way through the more minging spirits of Malibu, dry Martini and Archers by then and vodka, lime and soda was the drink of choice.

God, I was a right little tramp ?

It was 1989 and we used to drink Newcastle Brown Ale at Sunderland Poly for about 75p. The Cure and the Smiths were cool, all the student bars were named after Nelson Mandela and the Berlin Wall came down. We typed up our essays on word processors and we talked about how old we'd be in 2000.

when I was 18 it was 1994. I wore black and only black. I had long hair and was generally scruffy. Alternative / Grunge / Indie / Metal / Thrash was in. I listened to Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Sensor, Iron Maiden and various rather dodgy bands. I actually did have a mobile. We listened to Walkmans. Oasis market in Brum was seen as the ONLY place to buy clothes from. We drank snakebite, MD 20/20 Strawberry Rose, white lightening, diamond white and cheap lager. I was perpetually skint.

    I miss those days sometimes...

I was 18 in 1999. I spent my time partying, sleeping around and generally enjoying life. I was into garage music and old skool underground raves. I took drugs almost every weekend and went to work on a come down. I have no idea what I wore and what the fashions were but I do remember my rave outfit being lime green hotpants, a black lycra crop top, black trainers and glow sticks.

How sexy was I ! LOL

Hmm I was 18 in 1990 ?. I was growing out a bad perm that I used to set with a whole can of bristows every day. I wore awful hippy clothes sometimes, shorts and opaque black tights a lot, and DM's always. I was skinny, had a fabulous social life, drank loads, and met Mr Jolly for the first time.

I was 18 in 2001. I was at college and had been with the ex mr phb for a year. I used the sunbeds way too much, had long blonde hair, acrylic nails, was quite slim and looked good (shame I didn't think it at the time ?).

I wouldn't mind being 18 again, I'm behaving like I'm 18 now trying to recapture some of my youth spent in a long term relationship ☹️ I'm loving the freedom though!

I was 18 in 1992 (I am NOT liking that) I wore a lot of hotpants with thick black tights, bra tops, knee length platform boots, topped off with a leather bomber jacket that I saved and saved for, all £65 of it ?

We raved, took drugs, had bad sex, then raved some more. It was like one big party, hence the hazy memories ?

See I so should have been born a few years earlier. The crew I went raving with are 10 years older than me.

I loved PWEI when I was about 15/16. I went and saw them in Portsmouth and managed to get into their dressing room afterwards to meet them. I just stood there like a gibbering idiot, totally speechless ?

I was 18 in 1999. I started uni, I was seeing H, it was shortly before we got engaged. I shopped in top shop and miss selfridge, if I had an extra cash it was USC and Jane Norman. My wardrobe consisted of hot pants, mini skirts and tops that I now recognise my dad was right when he said he'd seen larger dishcloths - and I thought I was fat, I would kill for my figure back then now). I was listening to The Verve, Green Day and the like. I discovered what city life was like, was out almost every night and was drinking god awful drinks like red bull and vodka because it was only a pound a go in the students union.

It was 1991. I finished my A levels and spent every night (and most days) in a grotty pub called the Moss Hall Tavern in Finchley ? oh, the glamour. I wore mostly black, with ill advised other things. I carried a mirror embroidered bag, which contained 20 Marlboro, a pen and paper and a copy of "Ariel" by Sylvia Plath ?

I was desperately in love with someone who didn't love me (boo) and had a whale of a time drinking pints and getting maudlin about it.

    What HH said.

    Also 18 in 1992

Was always wearing hotpants and teeny tiny bra tops.

Went to loads of illegal raves around the country, took mind altering drugs and had bad sex in the back of camper vans ?

    Ooooh, they were the days!

I was 18 in 1999. I mostly wore jeans, tee-shirts and heeled boots, though I do remember wearing really tight vest tops to college as there was a boy I liked who sat in front of me. I used to put full makeup on every day (never do now) and spend ages doing my hair. I loved Greenday and Nirvana and Savage Garden (waaaa)

For my 18th I had a massive fight with my father (no change there then). I had a party with my family and then snuck out later that night to hang out with friends from college (who were all boys). Isn't that sad, sneaking out at 18? I was still doing my A Levels and I was single, though I did have a kiss and a cuddle with one of the boys that night. I met my H at the end of the year.

I was 18 in 1992. that was a year I went from convent school to drama school and did a whole lot of growing-up, very quickly!

I was ridiculously fit and slim (but I didn't think so at the time). Everyone at drama school was a bit alternative, so I tried to be too; I wore DMs with long hippy skirts, cut-off dungareed over thick black tights and a crop top, or leotards with mini skirts to go to the pub. I drank cider and black (alcopops didn't come out till I was nearly 21!) and lived on ryvita and chocolate milkshake. I listened to an eclectic combination od songs from the shows, and typical 90s indie - Pulp, Sleeper, REM, that sort of thing

    God, those were the days!

I was 18 in 1997 and was skinny and on my gap year working for a lab before starting Uni. I was engaged to a total tosser and was a bit of a tomboy into mechanics etc.

I loved Take That but as my fiance was a mosher I had to hide it ? I did quite like some of his music though, like Skid Row and Metallica ?

I used to wear one of my dad's shirts and thought it was the height of cool. Oh dear.

I'm much happier now and it's cool to like TT again ?

I was 18 in 1996, i went to the pub, thurs, fri, sat and sun night and could afford it somehow!!

I had just finished my boyf (the day before my 18th) who was a control freak and he ran down the road crying saying i'd ruined his life, i then went on to have quite a lot of flings!

I had a stage of going to go the hacienda, bowlers, wigan pier and maxines!! oh the nights that went on well into the next day!!

Way! One of the happiest moments of my life was running into the NME field at Glasto just as they struck up Eject and piling straight into the mosh pit (off my face) ahhhh. I've listen to the Poppies and Neds recently and realised that although I still love them for their nostalgia value, that they are a bit crap. Ditto Carter and The Sultan's of Ping FC.

Am I the oldest git on this thread ATM? <sob>

God yes. And, like everyone else, I was far too busy looking up my own bum to realise the value of having youth, energy, free time and getting into a size 12 [gnashes teeth]

I saw PWEI at the Carling Academy about 3 years ago... Was a real blast from the past and absolutely fantastic. PWEI were the only band me and my best mate could listen too as he was into rave and underground dance...

I was 18 in 1991, how depressing is that! I wore clothes that were far too tight/bright/shyte and thought I was the best. I listend to an eclectic mix of galliano, james and lots of dance and rave music and used to travel around a lot trying to find mythical parties that more often than not never materialised. I drank too much and took too many illegal drugs and thought that sleeping with boys would make me cooler. I had just started to compete in small racing serieses and used all my spare cash from a reasonably well paid job for a big bank to fund my weekends. My company mobile which was the size of a laptop was most coolest and most prized possession.

I was 18 in 1994, out with my first 'proper' boyfriend and on my year out before uni. I always seemed to have new clothes back then, as short as possible with high heels or ankle boots. I always seemed to be breezing in and out of home, though had alot going on at home at the time so perhaps it's just my distant mind.

I used to also think I was fat then, whilst wolfing down any food I could....i keep thinking where is my nice figure now?? Then i think back then I was always running somewhere or out dancing.

Gosh those were the heady days, I remember being at the Hammersmith Palais dancing to Baby D ? thinking I was the crust in my short new dress. Used to only ever drink vodka and orange nothing else. I would also rush home from the pub for Eurotrash teehee
