Being 18

When I was 18 it was 1993. I wore DMs with everything, stripy tights and horrid hippy style skirts. Grunge was in. We listened to Carter USM, the Wonderstuff and Neds. We didn't have mobiles. Next was seen as the pinacle of style and expense. We used to drink snakebite. Make me feel old and tell me...

Make me feel old and tell me about when you were 18.

I turned 18 in July 1997 I went to Uni in the September. I had a fantastic summer that year was amazing. I was a skinny minx at the time and could get away with wearing many clothes I couldn't even fit one leg in these days ?.

Turned 18 in the summer of 1991, and moved away to go to uni virtually immediately, where I got a great education in men and alcohol. Wore a lot of black and purple and heavy boots and was quite scruffy! Danced in a nightclub that was a former underground toilet (Bog Island, as it was nicknamed) and drank a lot of cider (it was the west country) and vodka and coke.

    What a great thread..

I was 18 in 2000. I was finishing performing arts at college which meant wearing very little and naughtiness backstage. I used 'sun in' on my hair and had acylic nails which had a different 'pattern' each time. I listened to RnB and Garage and went to the Shannon in Ilford (£10 all you can drink) and Time and Envy in Romford on a Saturday. Fave tipple was archers and orange. I used to buy my clothes in Morgan, Topshop or Miss Selfridge. Some hideous leapord print belly tops and pencil skirts. Summer holiday was 'Ayia Napa'!

I could have written this word for word, I saw Neds at Cardiff Uni, twas the best night ever, bar none!

Cant belive all these supposed Indie lovers and not one mention of The Wedding Present, saw them live too. Also wore customed army shirts with the docs and long fringed hippy skirts. I wanna be 18 again ?

I still believe that Miles Hunt will be mine ?

I was 18 in 1990, first year at Uni and met the ex Mr R. The only night of the week we didn't go out clubbing was a Sunday and many a night I'd get in, make fried eggs in a pal's sandwich toaster and get myself ready for lectures. Used to drink martini and lemonade and always had enough money to go out. I went through a stage of flowery bra tops and velvet hotpants and Grandad type cardigans from M&S. I thought I was the bees knees.?

    Those were the days. <sigh>

    i was 18 in 1998.

after my horrific 18th birthday, it took me a few months to dump my awful boyfriend. then i spent the next year falling out very badly with my mother, going out, getting drunk and having flings with lots of the guys i worked with. i listened to indie music, mostly scottish stuff at that, and wore baggy jeans and tight tops, or incredibly short skirts and tight tops, or flares and tight tops. i got my first tattoo as well.

favourite haunts were Berties, Subway (in the Cowgate, not Lothian Road), Sneaky Petes, Maggie Dicksons and The Last Drop (Planners Pub!), Egg at the art school, The Venue and The Attic. and every other pub that sold cheap booze.

ah, i loved being 18. work was easy, uni was fun, and i always had enough money to get pie-eyed all week!

I was 18 in 2002 and it was a horrendous year, so I wont depress you all with my story. 16 is a completely different matter though. I'd gladly go back to that age. I had a whale of a time being 16. It helped that I looked older, I suppose. Cursing it now though ?

I was 18 in 2000. I was at college training in Catering and Hospitatily and spent 6 nights out fof 7 in York drinking "Blastaways" and dancing in Toffs, Gatecrasher and Tall Trees. I was a size 14 and wore short skirts and heels all the time. I spent all my wages on booze and partying and the odd illict drug or two. I was with Mr Eggs but still enjoyed the attention of other men (we were a casual relationship to start). I listened to any kinda of dance music and Boyzone ?

Oh to be 18 again, I would do things sooo differently.

I was 18 in 1991, I had my first kiss 2 months after my birthday with my first ever boyfriend. I wore long black skirts and tops and red velvet flat pumps everywhere. I was still in school.

I drank Newky Brown / Mad Dog 20/20 or Hooch.

I was 18 in 2002, and left my evvvvvvvvvvvul school, went to China, taught English, travelled about a lot, took drugs for the first time, shagged a few crusty hippies and thai waiters and generally had a ball.

There are some very young people on hitched ?

i was 18 in 1989 and it was the time of aceeeeeeeeeed (well it was in leeds, it may have been over everywhere else). i was super skinny as i had glanduar fever aged 17. my clubbing outfit was cut off jeans over black opaque tights, kicker boots, a smock and a whistle round my neck. ? i used to smuggle my clothes out of the house and get changed in a pub called the three legs as it was the nearest one after i got off the bus.my dad would have not let me out of the house dressed like that, and looking back that would have been a smart move

i used to drive a red astra 'antibes' with white wheel trims and thought i was the epitome of cool

i drank guiness and black and thought i looked really cool there too

i listened to a guy called gerald and s express on my sony walkman

and i had a new boyfriend every other week

I was 18 in 1992 - Had met some bloke called MrJMP in the Oct - Spent Summer in Ibiza, then went on first BF GF holiday to Tobago with MrJMP in Dec (yes 9 weeks into the relationship , look where it got me)

Used to spend wages (well not mine MrJMP's) on clothes from Karen Millen & night outs at Emporium, Hanover Grand, The Cross or go to clubs up North as friends BF was a DJ for a well known at the time club.

My bedroom every Saturday night - stank of marlboro light, warm white wine, mixture of perfumes & dry cleaning bags left everywhere - it was the get ready room for 6 of us.

I was 18 in 1992. I'd already moved out of home when I was 17 and was renting an annexe on an old lady's house. I could get up to whatever I liked, as she couldn't hear the noise and liked having 'young people' about the place.

I was a rock chick and had heyooge hair (a-la Heart) and mega panda eyes make up. I wore a leather biker jacket, tiny denim skirts, these fabulous leather boots with buckles and chains all over them, and bra tops.

I hung out at the local rock pub every night with my group of friends drinking Newky Brown, 20/20 or snakebite and black. It would be the Canute or the Nexus in Southampton at the weekend. I drove a Ford Sierra Sapphire that had been modified within an inch of it's life and was WAAY to powerful for me at the time, being a new driver. God I loved that car though.

I'd just landed my first media job and was earning a decent wage, so life was very good indeed.

I was 18 in 1993. I had just passed my driving test and had a Vauxhall Chevette (I hated it but it served the purpose). I moved away from home to go to Uni. I was a regular wearer of Doc Martins, can't remember what other fashions was around at the time.

    I was 18 in 1993

I wore DMs all the time, wore shortish dresses most of the time, had my hair in plaits or pigtails.

I'd lived on my own for 2 years, and met my 1st long term BF. We got a house together & I started training to be a youth worker.

I went to The Leadmill (Sheffield) most weekends & most wednesdays, & drank a lot of gin.

I got Bernard as a 8 week old kitten, and he's still with me.

    Great thread!

I was 18 in 1990, listened to grunge rock and Metallica, lived in a flat next to a pub with my boyfriend, drank Merrydown cider and wore a leather biker jacket and hippy goth skirts, had died black hair and was at college studying Display Design which I changed to Graphic Design.

I worked at a holiday camp in the gift shop during college holidays.

I think I was driving a v rusty Vauxhall Cavalier and the boyfriends beach buggy, at weekends we would drive to the beach, get stoned, sleep it off then drive home!

I was 18 in 1990. I had Acid faces drawn on my jeans. I smoked Consulate fags. I listened to the U2 "Under a Blood Red Sky" album, The Cure and Prince constantly. I drank Snakebite and Black in a pub called Clouseau's. I wanted to live in a bedsit with my friend Leo who dressed like Judd Nelson in The Breakfast Club (he wore a bandana around his ankle). I smoked dope even though I hated how it made me feel because I thought I looked cool. I was, in summary, a tw*t.

It was 1992. Veeeery short skirts with black tights and baggy tops. Biker jacket. U2, Crowded House, Tchaikovsky (latter on vinyl for extra romanticism wankiness). Had depressing quotes about love all over the rooms of my room in halls. Drank Guinness and shots of Archers. Lusted after all the wrong people. Smoked Marlboro Lights, or Consulate for 'fun'. Was so very slim and still thought I was fat ?

I turned 18 in 2001. I was at 6th form and working in a hotel part time. I had an excellent figure but thought I was huge. I idolised embellished jeans from Fornarina and shopped at Gap. My favourite band was Savage Garden ? and I was dating a computer nerd who did terrible Yoda impressions during sex ?. We used to go out to Snobs in Birmingham when they still played metal and I could get utterly pissed on half a cocktail.

I turned 18 just before my A-levels in summer 1994. Had long hair, wore DMs (scarlet) or my dad's hiking boots, which I accessorised with bright pink and turquoise ribbons for laces. Clothes were generally of the tie-dyed trouser or those ethnicy woven dungaree nature. Most of my clothes came from the Army surplus store or the Sue Ryder.

Alternated between two groups of mates; the cool kids who smoked dope lots, and the ones who did school plays. We went Droming (to Colchester Hippodrome) every week, drank Guinness or stout, and did loads of karaeoke. I had a long-ish term boyfriend who drove a van (he dielivered for his mum's company) and he'd drive me home after nights out, but we'd take a detour to park up by the woods and shag in the back of the van. ? ? His mum's company delivered industrial cleaning products, it's a miracle I didn't end up with unpleasant burns in sensitive places ??

I was 18 in 2000, I was still living at my folks, working part time and spending my money on going out drinking at the weekends with my friends. I wore black all the time, but mostly to slim me down. I was a size 16/18 and hated it, but wish i could go back to that as now a size 22. I can't remember what music i liked as its changed so much over the past 10 years, but it was probably cheesy pop and dance music.

I was 18 in 1987. I thought the world was my frikking oyster! My abiding memories are of nights at the Gin Palace, Venue, Stage 3, Bon Bonny's, Caesars Palace, Flim -flams, Kelly's, Scribbles and many more! Life was about nights out, clothes (no "goth" for me, even back then it was all about the pursuit of glamour!)my mates, my bloke, music (especially old skool, aciiiiiid, house)American shows-Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest et al. I had my first girlie holiday to Benidorm (well it WAS '87!) and later my first holiday with my then bloke-2 weeks in Rimini on the Adriatic Riviera-class or what!

I remember my mum sitting on my bed and we would chat, whilst I tried on a succession of outfits whilst getting ready for a night on the lash, Saturday afternoons shopping splurging my wages on clothes and my dad saying "How much?!" when I showed the fruits of my labour to mum and sis, hooky goods doing the rounds at work (someone was always selling knocked off designer goods, video tapes-naughty I know!), the long hot summers, back combing, frosted pink or cerise lipstick, lots of black eyeliner, that I was the first to have a twin canopy sunbed with "Platinum" fast tan tubes(tis a wonder I haven't got a face like a leather handbag!), step aerobics.....so many things!

    I love this thread

It was 1992 (?) and I got a ticket to Glastonbury festival for my birthday. The only time I went legitimatly. (Jumped fences for a few years after that) I was into the Wedding Present, New Order, Jesus Jones & a very obscure band called the Moonflowers.

I wore my green DMs all the time having graduated from monkey boots. I pissed around at 6th form & decided to change my A level subjects. Spent more time in the pub,,,,,

    I loved being 18 *sigh*

I did the DMs and snakebite thing at the age of 15/16 so that would have been about 1991/92. At the age of 18 (so about 1994) I was at sixth form doing a levels and getting ready to go off to uni. I went to college in term time and was a waitress through the summer. I had a little ford fiesta and the boot was my wardrobe. I never knew where I'd be staying from one day to the next, I treated my parents house like a hotel going home only to get my washing done, eat a decent meal and stay the occasional night! I spent weekends clubbing or getting very drunk on stella. I hung out with friends, went to the beach, had no cares in the world. Life was free and easy and I loved it. Good times.

1994. desperate rock chick style, i smelt strongly of Poison (which makes you feel really sick when your hair smells of it when you wake up with a diamond white/ 20/20 hangover), nearly killed in an horrific car crash then headed off to agricultural college in the middle of nowhere where there was a male/female ratio of 12-1, which was marvellous (if sober due to the medication following car crash) fun.

i spent my 18th at nottingham rock city and i snogged a band member from terrorvision
