Best Man Suit

I think the couple pay for all suit and dress hire traditionally. If you don't have the budget then suit hire is not required, many of the trendiest grooms these days are wearing their own suits.

If your are hiring or asking him to wear a specific suit that needs to be purchased for the occasion then you pay. If you are happy for him to wear a suit of his choosing and he chooses to buy a new one then he should pay. Same with all the groomsmen/ ushers. Similarly if you are asking him to get a new suit and he's choosing it and chooses a more expensive one that you have budgeted for then he should pay the difference.

All our groomsmen are being asked to wear grey suits- the majority of them have a mid-grey suit and the on who doesn't has agreed to buy his own as he will wear it again, though we did offer to pay. We want them in matching ties so are buying those for them. We have asked them all to wear brown shoes, which most of them have and the one who doesn't is again willing to pay for his own though we have offered an amount towards them.
