Black tie invite wording

KEG, 30 October, 2008 at 15:19 Posted on Planning 0 4

I am going to get my invites printed on the weekend (very excited!!), Just unsure whether or not to put black tie in the invite somewhere.

H2B, Dad, BM and Usher are all going in black tie/dinner suits, (its a late wedding at 4.30pm, adult affair), just wondering would you put black tie in the wording or not? I dont expect peeps to go out and buy a dinner suit, but dont want peeps to feel like a spare part either, what is the etiquette please??

I have seen dresscodes as 'black tie or lounge suits' to indicate that you can wear black tie, but needn't worry about going out and buying new gear if you don't have a DJ?

I dont know if this helps but here is part of an article I wrote for a magazine in January about dress codes:

    • Black-tie preferred: This is exactly as it sounds your host would prefer evening wear (dinner suits and bow-ties) however it is not necessary. Good manners would indicate that evening wear should be worn if possible.

    • Black-tie optional: This is the same as black-tie preferred; the only difference being, there is no preference therefore it would not be bad manners to wear a lounge suit.

Thank you, I think Black tie optional sounds good, gives them an indication of what is being worn, but not to feel obliged.?

    KEG,

Glad I could help. I think optional seems like the right wording for what your looking for. IMO

We are having a black and white themed wedding.... Grooms party are all in Black and white tails during day and then DJ's in the evening.....

We have put on our invites "Black tie optional, dancing shoes essential"

    Hope that helps.
