My poor wee dog is a nervous wreck tonight. there is a massive firework display where we live and all the bangs are terrifying my wee dog, he is shaking and peeing with the fright.

    Hi love x

Am a Veterinary nurse and I massively sympathise with you its awful this time of year for the poor things and almost as awful for owners as we see them going mental and so frantic x Few tips if your interested... If he is cowering at the noise, find him a sqafe place like a den - make it where he feels the most safe ie his favourite spot under the bed or whatever- make it a haven- cover it over, put his fave toys in, put a t shirt that smells like you etc . Also close curtains, put music /TV on loud to drown the worst of the sound out. whatever you do DONOT give him any attention at all as this just reinforces the behaviour...(I know this bit is so so hard but please trust me it just ingrains the fear- you are validating it in a way if that makes sense?)

As a matter of urgency get yourself to the vets and get some either skullcap and vallerian ( herbal meds great when works but only works in bout 3/4 dogs!) or a DAP spray/collar which is a pheremone but it might not work in the time you need. At the very last result if he is otherwisefit and well and has been seen recently by a vet you can ask for Diazepam this year but really get prepared for next year about the month before bonfire night and I promise there are ways to make this more helpful xx The RSPCA have really good advice on website xxPS Your local Vet Nurse advice is free xxx

Hope this helps a bit and when its all over tonight you can have lots of cuddles with your boy xxxxxx

    Aww, poor doggies ☹️

Mine is the same, the fireworks started around here last night big time and he was running round the house like a lunatic and he slept on our bed last night. I'm dreading tonight.

My mums eldest dog is awful, she was a stray and was born around the millenium. We do not know what happened with the fire works at the time. Her tail will be right underneath her and her panting is unreal. Mum has tried allsorts, but works best now is Kalms, she starts them a week before and up to a week after she is still upset but it does calm her down. My sister has her at the moment, as parents away on a cruise, so she has the washing machine on the ready and her bedroom door will open for comfort. We have a 16 week old choc lab, and as yet she OK. But I believe its when they get older. Tonight is going to be awful for pets, its such a shame

Marmite (my cat) & I used to live in Leicester so it was even worse with Diwali & Bonfire night within days of eachother.

I used to close the curtains and put the radio/tv on slightly louder than normal, I would also let her sleep where she felt safe e.g. she wouldn't be allowed on certain chairs, but if that's where she seemed to settle then she stayed there, I'd also find her under my bed!

My cat Harvey is also a firework fan. I think it stems from my ex holding him up at the window as a kitten. He sits on the garage roof to watch thunderstorms too!

    Mad!

Mine do this as well and their heads move all over the place watching them. It's really funny. Not funny when animals are scared though and I'm getting my parents 12 month old Laso tonight as they are on holiday and this is her first year when it is 5th November so I'm hoping she will be ok as she is generally quite a scared puppy. I'm presuming last year she didn't hear any because she was still tiny and living with her mum on a farm in the middle of no where.

My cats love it when it Thunders too...they rush outside!!

Its not nice when they are scared....my uncle used to have a collie that used to try to get under the sofa and hide...He was a massive dog and there was no gap under the sofa for him to get in to!

    Hello

totally agree about fireworks. we get them for ages here, diwali, eid, guy fawkes and my poor doggie is going mad. she barks and barks when they go off. we're still having them tonight. We got DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) collar and plug-ins from the vet. she is poss slightly less scared but still barking her head off! maybe she'd be even worse without the DAP things, hard to tell. she is 8 but we've only had her 3 months as we rehomed her so it's our first firework season with her. also trying rescue remedy. and doing the ignoring thing though it's very hard! her safe place is under our bed but sometimes she won't go in there, just goes to balcony doors and barks and barks. we are in a flat so i'm amazed the neighbours have not complained so far.

can't quite see what your doggie is, a westie maybe, or a small poodle or bichon?

(have not been on this site for ages, nice to be back. anyone remember me?)
