BM in trousers

Hello Hitchers! I'm hoping you can help me. FSIL is one of my BM's, and after having a chat at the weekend, I don't want to make her wear a dress. Hello Hitchers!

I'm hoping you can help me. FSIL is one of my BM's, and after having a chat at the weekend, I don't want to make her wear a dress. She said she'd do it for me, but I know it's not her at all, and she wouldn't be comfortable. I want to give her that choice rather than being forced to wear a dress but not wanting to hurt my feelings.

I have 2 MOH's, and 2 BM's, and now one of them will be in trousers. Have any of you seen something like this done before? I'm going to have a look on pinterest, but any experience with this would be appreciated! How should it work with colours? Would a buttonhole work better than a bouquet?

Do you know where I can find nice suits in a size 18/20? ASOS have nice tailoring but I don't have much experience with it. This is the kind of idea we're going for:

Our intended colour is purple, but the shade hasn't been decided yet. Should she match the BM colours or can they be different?

Any advice or suggestions will be much appreciated!

I think you're being very accommodating and thoughtful - but if you're worried about not getting it quite right, leave it up to her. Send her photos of BM dresses you like and ask her to send you pictures of suits/trousers that she is comfortable with and that she thinks will tone with the dresses. That way you completely avoid worrying that you are pushing her into something she is uncomfortable with. good luck!

I agree with this - if you give her the colours etc that you would like you can leave her to get some ideas together. That way you dont need to worry about offending her/making her feel uncomfortable and she doesn't need to worry about offending you back if you choose something that she wouldnt be comfortable in.

I really admire how much thought you are putting into this Smiley smile

It's great you are being so accommodating so that your friend is comfy.

There was an episode on don't tell the bride where one of the bridesmaids wore a suit and I can't remember if it was the shirt or the tie but part of it matched the bridesmaids colour. Would imagine with enough research you could find a nice top or something to tie in with the other girls so she can still be obvious as a bridesmaid.

I have nothing particularly constructive to add other than its fab you're open to something different and also how lovely some of the outfits on here are. The idea of a fitted suit jacket over a loose top and tailored trousers sounds lovely.

Just to echo what everyone is saying about how considerate you are being.

I have to admit I do like the androgynous look and sharp tailoring.

If it were me, I would opt for the same colour or a similar shade so theres a coherent look. I would tie it together via accessories e.g. necklaces, hair pieces, buttonholes.

Please do a flash once you have decided as I would really love to see how this turns out!

I couldnt find a picture of what i mean but - i think a waistcoat would look amazing with the trousers. almost like a female tux (but in the bridesmaid colours). (new format means i cant see when you are getting married - but if it is summer/warm weather, this would be a bit cooler than a jacket). id suggest minimal makeup, just enough to bring the look together.

i think it would be easier to choose the trouser suit first before the dresses for bms as it will be harder to find what you need the other way on.

as others have said, i think you are a great friend to put so much effort into her comfort. i was at a wedding a while ago, and a bridesmaid very reluctantly wore a frock. by 9pm she got changed into trousers and a polo shirt - and looked so much better and happier for it. she had worn the dress for the bride, but there is no hiding that level of discomfort.

More than you'd want to spend, but to go with your tartan!

Thanks for all your suggestions! Knew I could count on the hitchers to point me in the right direction!

I just want to respect who she is, and I don't want her to pretend to be someone else for any reason! She has my full support, and I'm sure we'll find something we're both happy with in the next wee while.

Wedding is August next year, so we do have a while to get things sorted, but my plan is to buy the dresses just after Christmas, hopefully in the sales, so I want to have a good idea of what we're going for in advance!
