Booths Supermarket-is it like Waitrose?

Fenella Fudge, 1 November, 2008 at 19:04 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

I keep hearing the adverts on the radio...I must admit I automatically think they are advertising Boots rather than Booths but I just wondered what type of shop it is? Is it like Waitrose?

Might take a drive out to the Knutsford one tomorrow to have a look.

I believe it's owned by Sainsbury's, so I would have thought more like them but trying to be a bit posher. Or something!

As far as i know there are none in the South, well London or Surrey.

I know that doesn't answer your question?

I think it is Northern. They are good for locally produced products. They used to be great for cooking products that were hard to find elsewhere but nowadays the big supermarkets sell everything anyway.

Also, the Booths near me stock different things so you still might not find what you are looking for.

booths is independent, always has been. in fact i think its the only family owned chain of supermarkets there is in the UK. its northern yes, and its very like waitrose, and not quite as slick, but the quality is excellent, and all the veg and meat is from local suppliers. its where we go when there is a need to go to a supermarket. its more expensive than sainsburys, but the quality is about a thousand times better.

Actually, its a pretty unusual company - kind of like john lewis partners, that sort of thing, but with more staff involvement. its also very traditional and quite old fashioned in its approach. the chairman is edwin booth, and the staff all call him "Mr Edwin" ?. apparently he s a really nice bloke, my uncle shot portraits of him for their annual report a couple of years ago and he liked the result so much that he sent him a magnum of laurent perrier.

Yeah, it's the Waitrose of the North, just like Sheffield is the Rome of the North ?

(Actually it's not at all bad.)

    ?

It used to be THE place to get your speciality things from. Where I lived, it was actually a little corner shop at the bottom of my street when i was growing up and we used to get our cream cheese from there. Happy days.

Now I agree, the local produce selection is good. However, for non-fresh goods (what is the word?), I don't think the selection is that good compared to other supermarkets (because I know I can get better items elsewhere). Oh no, their chocolate section is always good. And they are known for good spirits selections too.

Thanks for the info everyone. We went to the nearest one yesterday and really liked it.

The choice of meat and vegetables was great and H was very impressed with the alcohol section. I think we have now found our new supermarket plus its a bit closer than Waitrose.

Booths was voted in December 2006 one of the world’s top 25 food heroes by an international academy of 2,000 industry experts.

It beat all its British competitors including Harrods, Fortnum and Masons and Waitrose. The panel of food experts was brought together by national trade publication, The Grocer, and asked to rank their favourite food retailers from anywhere in the world.

They were impressed by the quality of the company’s offer, its focus on local sourcing (mainly from Lancashire and Cumbria)and innovation, excellent customer service, knowledge of products and friendly staff.

Judges spoke about the "commitment to local food while satisfying the premium shopper’s palate".

Actually I don't. I only visit booths when on holiday in the lake district. I'm a LGO in manchester. Just get very peeved when people (usually southeners) disparage great nortnern institutions.

calmed down now and realise she probably just didn't know any better (all that london fog and smog you read about polluting her brain. Or is that just a stereotype - oops!)

Why are you talking like you copied and pasted a chunk of a Booths corporate press release then? ? And why be so effing rude as per your above quote on your second ever post on Hitched? Sheesh (copyright 2008 NickJ)

Oh yay, Booths will be pleased you came on here and insulted a load of potential customers. I love it when the stoopids come out to play ?

Booths always makes me think of my ex. He went to uni in Lancaster and we seemed to be in Booths all the time when I used to go up at the weekends. Lovely food there.
