Boring question - how to make white clothes white again?

My whites are mingy and grey. I always separate loads, but they just don't stay nice for long.

I've tried oxy white stuff in with my washing powder but it's made no difference. Any other tips?

I googled and one of the suggestions was hanging them in the sun. I live in Scotland, please no one make a daft suggestion like that!

    Wash them with bleach (works for cotton, not so much for other fibres)

    Also makes your washing machine sparkly and non-smelly.

    I bleach whites in the bath for a while sometimes before putting them in for a normal wash. That or you could listen to BARRY SCOTTTTT and try the vanish whites that's supposed to work miracles haha.

    Sink/bath + bleach (yep, squirt of Domestos fine) + warm water + 10 mins swirls/swishes/checks on colour. Works better if you have a bright room or a window near the sink.

    I never knew this. Would it get out yellowy sun cream stains? I really should stop buying white summer clothes - they just get ruined.

    How much can you put in the washing machine? I usually just do the bath thing for my minging whites

    I put a biq squirt of bleach in the washing machine INSTEAD of powder. (About a cap and a half full I guess)

    I have the whitest surplice in the choir.

    No, by the time it has been properly machine rinsed (and I line dry in the sun if poss) it doesn't smell. And neither will your washing machine. Double bargain!

    Don't try this on delicate fabrics like silk.
