Bride's Speech!

MissC2MrsB, 22 February, 2017 at 11:03 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi everyone,

I just wanted a bit of advice on writing my own speech for my big day.

Have any of you lovely brides written your own or have a specific website or template that you found useful?

I am especially interested in speaking about my mum in the speech as she is my rock and best friend and has done so much for us over the years. I want the parts about her to be heartfelt and full of love and emotion but I don't want to go on and on (which is hard for me! Lol)

So I just wondered if anyone had honoured their mother in particular in their speech and how is best to go about it.

Any help will be greatfully received ! Smiley laugh

thanks! Xx

Do it from the heart and don't overthink it. Time it as well. If you think you're talking too long then you probably are so trim it a bit.

I want to do one to thank my OH and his family for welcoming me and my daughter into their family so easily. My OH has also adopted my daughter and I really want to honour him for that, he's an amazing person and deserves the recognition. So I've just written a few lines about him. I also want to talk a little about the charity we're donating to, Eden Ministry in case you're interested. Because I chose it I want to give people a little information about them.

Everyone thinks they need to be funny and witty and deep and make everyone laugh or cry. Just be genuine and honest about how amazing your mum is and you'll be fine.

    This was mine -

'I’m going to keep this short and sweet as my new brother in law Calum mentioned that he might heckle me so I’ll leave that pleasure for the best man (sorry Neil!)

My husband and I would like to thank you all for being here to share our day – it really means a lot to us to see all our loved ones here to celebrate with us, particularly those who have travelled long distances to get here.

I’m guessing people won’t be surprised that it’s me doing the speech rather than Stuart (as is the tradition) as I’m the mouthy one and would find it difficult to keep quiet! We’re not really ones for following traditions anyway and have been described variously as eccentric, eclectic, weirdos and geeks (all of which are good things in our book!) – the fact we are so similar is probably why we make such a good couple.

The first person I will mention is Stuart’s mum, Anne. Those here will know that Anne passed away a couple of months ago - it still feels very surreal that we are doing this day without Anne here. She welcomed me into her family and was endlessly supportive of Stuart and I – plus she took my side over his most of the time which was brilliant! I couldn’t have asked for a better mother in law and we remember her in so many ways every day.

I will also mention Stuart’s dad – Harry passed away before I met Stuart but I’ve heard so many stories from Anne and from his boys. It seems to be a Wilson family trait to be polite to strangers but to torment friends and family members mercilessly so I expect that I would have been equal parts fond and feart of Harry! I catch sight of glimpses of Harry in Stuart and his brothers and I’m sure he would have been proud of the men his boys have become.

I would like to recognise all our family members who have made us who we are and to make a toast to them – To Those Gone Before Us.

I would like to say a special thank you to my mum and dad. You have given me every chance in life and always been there to help and support me in everything that I have done - from supporting me to chase my dreams, to both of you coming to practically every concert I was ever in, to always pushing me to reach for better grades, jobs and goals. You will have been married for 40 years next January and I hope that we will do the same (but hopefully with less earth in the back of household appliances!)

I would also like to thank you to our best man, Neil, and to my bridesmaid, Laura for their support and for organising our stag and hen do’s.

We have a couple of presents to give to people to express our thanks (Stuart passes out presents).

I’m now going to hand over to Neil so he can start slagging off Stuart but I hope everyone here has a fabulous evening and again, thank you very much for coming. Cheers!'

I tried to keep it fairly short and not get too 'gushing' but say everything I wanted to say. I didn't use a specific template but wrote down the main points I wanted to make and then expanded them.

    He is pretty marvellous!

You'll be fine. Remember - it's a room full of people who love you and want to hear what you have to say so whatever you say will go down a storm!
