Bridesmaid dress with a Tea Length wedding dress

NYCBride, 27 January, 2014 at 22:40 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hello fellow hitchers,

I'm looking for a bit of inspiration / advice about bridesmaid dresses. I'm getting married in September and my 12 year old niece will be a flower girl with my 18 year old niece being a bridesmaid. I'm not too worried about the dress for my youngest niece but I'm totally lacking inspiration for the eldest.

My wedding dress is the Justin Alexander 8465 in coffee/ivory : http://www.justinalexanderbridal.com/wedding_dresses/8465 which is a tea length dress. I think my niece would prefer a maxi dress style as she's quite self-conscious. She's 5'9 and a size 6/8 which I'd kill to be but she's usually in jeans or joggers and I want her to feel comfortable. The thing is, I'm not sure a long bridesmaid dress will look OK with a tea length wedding dress. Most of then pictures of tea length dresses have the bridesmaids in the same /similar length.

What do you think? Would a short wedding dress/long bridesmaid dress seem odd to you or doesn't it matter. We're getting married outside in a small ceremony (about 20 people) so maybe I'm over thinking it.

Thanks

Have you considered a high- low hem? Could potentially be a solution. I think that a long dress would be fine though if she felt too uncomfortable to wear a shorter one. x

I had the same dress as you (but in the coffee) and my BMs wore cream knee length dresses.

However Mini on here had a tea length and her BMs wore floor length and it looked fab.

First of all, your dress is absolutely beautiful! However, I think that a long BM dress may look a little out of place but I think it would depend on the style / colour of it. At the end of the day, providing your BM feels nice she'll look nice & whatever she wears she wont be a patch on you in your wedding dress.

Thanks for all your replies ladies. I've suggested to my niece that we pay a visit to Coast as they have lots of beautiful dresses of different lengths. Ideally I think I'd prefer her in a shorter length dress (Kharv - you and your bridesmaids looked lovely) but I'd rather she wears something that she's comfortable in.

Ddphunk, I can't believe we're dress twins as well although I have to say that as soon as I saw the JA 8465 it just screamed New York wedding. I feel like we need our own thread to keep each other updated with our plans. I have to admit that because we have friends and family coming with us, I've focused quite a lot on the elements that will make the day an experience for them and am only now starting to think about things like hair and make-up for me. If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them x

Depend on style I think. If you choose for her long nice fitted dress it should be fine. Look on this one: https://evica.co.uk/prod/one-shoulder-full-length-empire-bridesmaid-evening-dress-gown/sid/492. I think it would look great with your wedding dress.

I had floor length bm's with a tea length bride. The way I saw it is that no one would think it odd to have a long bride dress with short bm's , so why not the other way around?

I don't think it would be at all, if your niece is comfortable in a longer dress I'd have her in that Smiley smile no one will think anything of it I'm sure!

Ooh mini, your bridal party look lovely,.. Makes me want BM's! Ha. I defo agree with your dress length logic.

Kharv - this place is seriously addictive, I'm going nowhere! Smiley winking

NYBride - funny you should say that, I bought my JA8465 preowned and they also married in Central Park! Beyond spooky! I haven't been organised enough to think hair & make up yet. Really need to get a wiggle on with the finer details. My mum has finally booked her flights though - yippee!

Have you found a photographer and officiant yet?
