Bridesmaid wants me to order her dress in size smaller so she can loose weight

McDob, 18 January, 2009 at 16:08 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi all

I am getting married in 4 months (16 May) and am about to order BM dresses. The thing is, one of them wants me to order it in a size smaller than she was measured for as she is planning to loose some weight. I am not sure what to do - I want to encourage her but dont want the dress to be too small as there wont be time to order another one, and it is easier to alter a dress that is too big than one that is too small. What should I do?

Thanks!

Order the size she is now and don't tell her.

Dresses can normally be easily altered down by a few sizes depending on the style - but like you say they can't be altered up if she doesn't manage to lose as much weight as she'd like.

If she finds out - blame it on the shop!

99% of the time the shop won't let you order a smaller size than she was measured for, precisely because if she doesn't lose the weight they can't get another one in time. Order it the size she is now. They can take it in very easily. My wedding dress was taken in from a size 14 to a size 10 and you'd never have known.

I was bridesmaid last year and the other bridesmaid ordered the size too small dress planning on losing the weight. She didn't. And ended up having to buy a different dress. The shop had stopped doing the same style so we ended up wearing differnt dresses. The bride was not impressed... Do n ot buy that smaller dress!!!! Alterations are easy should she manage to loose weight x

I agree with everyone else but I would explain to her why you won't order a smaller size because you don't want to fall out a few weeks before the wedding if she finds out.

Thank you all very much for your advice! You have convinced me that I should definitely order it in the size she is now. I can always blame it on the shop not allowing her to order a size below like you say!

    And me!!

My BMs tried on their dresses for the first time yesterday as they had just come in and they were both a little big. One looked very big - almost a size too big and she was worried there would be problems altering it to fit. The ladies in the shop were very reassuring and saying the the size down would be very tight and its much better to resize down then to try and get a small dress to fit. Its more work for the seamstress but it can be done and will fit perfectly when finished. It will be more comfortable too I would imagine then a dress that is slightly too tight.
