Bridesmaids dresses - DISASTER

sue250, 2 May, 2012 at 10:10 Posted on Planning 0 13

Sorry for the long rant – I don’t post much – I’m more a lurker but just needed to get it off my chest.

Its 3 days until our wedding day and I asked one of my bridesmaids to pick the dresses up yesterday from the shop after the final alterations, to cut a long story short the dresses are a mess. The seamstress has taken one of the dresses in too much around the hips, my chief bridesmaid cant even sit and stand up properly, the hems aren’t right and are falling down, the pleats on the front of the dress are coming loose and all of the dresses have pulls in - to the extent where the bottom of one of them was gathered and you can see where it has been pulled. The bridesmaid’s dress that I got before one of them fell pregnant and couldn’t be a bridesmaid is stained despite not having been out of the cover or the shop and it has pulls on the back – the pregnant bridesmaid only tried it on once. And none of the lengths are right and you can see there feet – they look dreadful!!!!! I ordered these 16 months ago and specifically said every time we have been that they need to be long enough to cover the feet but she has obviously taken the measurement wrong as one bridesmaid did her own measurements and it fits perfectly!!!

I’m so glad the girls tried them on before Saturday I would have been gutted for them to have to wear them.

The shop owner told me last night that because one of the dresses has been taken in it can’t be altered again so basically she can’t move in it and there is no alterations she can get done. She’s denying that the dresses had pulls in them when she steamed them. They weren’t even cheap they cost e £130 a dress.

This isn’t the first and only thing to go wrong with the dresses – they were originally sent in the wrong color,.

I’ve now got to drag my bridesmaids out shopping tonight to try and find new dresses at short notice and I’m going to be out of pocket unless I can get a refund from her or go through the wedding insurance. I don’t trust the shop to be able to fix it and I’ve lost complete faith in her and her shop and tbh I’ve got to the stage where I really don’t even want to look at the dresses again

Anyone else ever had problems like this and claimed through their insurance?

I'm afraid I don't have any advice, but I didn't want to read and run. I'm sure someone will be along soon to offer you advice about claiming on your insurance.

I really hope you can find some nice dresses on the high street. Perhaps you could let us know your colour scheme and we can have a little look online to see if we can find anything?

I've no experience in this but the goods aren't of the expected standard so I'd be looking for a full refund. Phone your insurance provider and ask for their advice.

I wish you the very best of luck finding dresses for your BMs

Hopefully, your insurance should cover you for faulty workmanship and I'm sure they will be able to offer advice as to the procedure. It's awful that after all that time being ordered that they are no good. I would take some photos of the bridesmaid's in them and also close up photos of the snags, wonky hems etc so that you can take the matter up with Trading Standards after the wedding as it sounds as if you have a claim that they can help you with under the 'not fit for purpose' trading laws. As the others have said, Debenhams,Monsoon, M & S, BHS, H & M all have off the peg dresses and I hope you all get fixed up. Let us know how you go on.

    Oh no! That's really awful.

Sorry you've got this added stress 3 days before your wedding. I don't have any advice in terms of getting your money back however fingers crossed you get it back.

That's terrible!! You should be able to get some kind of money from insurance.

Atleast it's a bit easier to get new dresses for the bridesmaids than a wedding dress?

Just try and think in a few weeks once it's all sorted you'll be laughing about it. The dresses you end up with might even be nicer than what you had originally!

God I am so sorry to hear that. It's the last thing you need at any point especially 3 days before the wedding! Why do they always pass the buck? So much for the customer being right.

I hope you find suitable replacements. I've not got wedding insurance so I can't comment but I am now hoping I wont need it.

    xx

Just thought i would just update you with what went on with the dresses, meant to do it last week but just didn’t have time. I phoned the insurance and because the damage hadn’t happened in my possession I wasn’t covered and after the unprofessional email (blaming me, telling me it was my bridesmaids that had sat there and pulled at the dress, it was their fault that they had lost weight etc) my now husband hit the roof and decided that he would come to the shop with me and the bridesmaids tat she was accusing of damaging the dress. To cut a very long story short she offered me £200 refund, which I took and went to the Trafford centre with my 3 bridesmaids and found 3 perfect dresses for them and they all looked amazing and the colour was perfect – in fact they were better than the rubbish I had paid a lot of money for.

I don’t want to say who the supplier was just in case someone else is using her and I don’t want to cause un-necessary stress but make sure you check your dresses each time you see them – the seamstress she used should really think of going into a different profession as the workmanship was disgusting.

But all in all the actual wedding went completely perfect and was the happiest day of my life Smiley smile

What an awful situation to find yourself in!! So glad you managed to get new dresses sorted though for your BM. What appalling service though ..... How could the seamstress really return the dresses in such a bad state -particularly if they were brand new to start with!! Glad you had a fabulous wedding day and didn't let this spoil things for you.
