Bridesmaids / groomsmen

Bliss, 8 April, 2022 at 00:24 Posted on Planning 0 4
We are getting married in October and my partners family and friends all live in Australia and we are getting married in England. As it stands he doesn’t even know who will be his best man as the one he wants might not be able to fly in for the wedding. I have got 5 bridesmaids. How do we get around it looking odd that I have 5 and he will have one?! Or none?! Is the whole 1:1 with groomsmen and bridesmaids still a thing or can anyone suggest how we make this look right?!

You can do what you like. My fiancé is not having anyone, no best man or groomsmen (that’s an American thing anyway) and I have one adult BM and 4 juniors plus a page boy! We aren’t worried about how it will look at all. As long as you are happy with the people supporting you, it doesn’t matter how it looks in my opinion.

There’s no need for the numbers to match. I’m having 3 and my fiancé has 6. He just has a bigger group of close friends than I do and those were the people we wanted!

Years ago, the groom only ever had the 1 best man. In those days, the best man would walk back down the aisle with one of the bridesmaids (usually the MOH if there was one) and the other bridesmaids would walk either in pairs or singly. It's only recently that equal numbers seem to have become a thing, so don't worry about it. You can't ditch four of your bridesmaids for no good reason, and it would be daft for him to invite 4 people he doesn't particularly like to be groomsmen!

My FH just has the one best man! He didn't want groomsmen as he prefers being one on one with people so liked the idea of just one guy to coordinate with, rely on and be hanging out with in the morning etc.

Meanwhile I have two bridesmaids, a MOH and wanted my best guys involved too - so our ushers are my men as it were and very much included in "Team Bride"!

I honestly hate the pressure on equal parties and think that you should each be able to have whoever you want! You can mix everyone up in photos and tbh the candid ones are always better than the posed ones of everyone standing in a line (in my opinion anyway!). The groom and the best man usually enter from the side as well, it's very American/TV wedding to have groomsmen walking down arm in arm with a bridesmaid!

As RomanticGreen as said too, it is traditional that the groom only has one best man - groomsmen were always an American thing, though they've become much more common now - so I don't think there's anything that would feel "wrong" about only having a best man Smiley smile
