Brunettes that use home dyes

HatTrick, 28 August, 2013 at 23:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I need a dark brown dye that isn't too red. They always look nice and chocolatey on the box but always have a red tint on my hair. Is this my hairs fault or the dye? Any recs?

Depending on how dark you want to go (and whether you are covering grey as I am!) I use either perfect 10 dark brown or darkest brown.....the darkest brown is almost black.

Most Brown dyes do this I've found, but I now use Casting by Loreal non perm. In Milk Chocolate, comes up really dark brown, and lasts a while before the red tinge sets it. As Dawn says, never get the dark brown one, turns out pure black! I find if you colour your hair often the dye builds up more and colous are darker!

Red tinge? Would it be the tones in your own hair coming through? I use garnier nutrisse number 4 which is a real dark chocolate brown and after a couple of washes settles into a dark chocolate colour

Another shout for Garnier Nutrisse 4. I love it. My fave time for the colour is 2 washes after colouring it!

I too get natural red tones come through but this sorts them out.

Here's a photo - this is from Friday and Its a good month and a half since I coloured it -

I recommend L'Oreal Casting Crème Hair Gloss Dye Dark Chocolate colour. It is a nice rich colour but not red or too black.

May I forum nab for a minute? I've got some grey (YES, GREY) hair I'm trying to get rid of before the wedding. I've had bad experiences with hair colouring in the past; it tends to leave my hair very dry and brittle. Is the Garnier one good for dry / combo hair (ie. oily at the roots, dry at the ends) and does it cover grey? I don't want to look like the bride of Frankenstein on my wedding day!

    Ta.

My natural colour is dark blonde/light mousey brown and I always struggle and get red tinge coming through.

I'm now using Boots own hair dye in dark brown and it's great. It did come out quite dark (not quite black) but it does tone down a bit and no red tinge! Yay!

It's much cheaper than branded colours too and has left my hair in great condition.

You need an ash based brown H (generally these are named 'medium brown, dark brown', etc). If you use a warm one (ones with things like chocolate in the name), they are red based. I use this one as my hair has a lot of red in it naturally: http://www.superdrug.com/superdrug/superdrug-creme-sensations-dark-brown-40/invt/275258&bklist=

Thanks all. I've used SuperDrug ones before P and like them but that shade is a bit too dark I think. I'll have a look for a slightly lighter one when I go in tomorrow. I didn't realise it was my own hair causing the redness, I have no idea what my actual hair colour is!

I use live XXS Bitter Sweet Chocolate.

No red for me with this, even though it is prevalent in my natural colour.

The Creme Gloss Coffee colours (latte, moche etc) don't have red in them. I hate any red in my hair, I look like Ozzy Osborne.

The best hair dye I have used in ages is a new l'oreal one called mousse absolue, it's ready mixed and so easy and if you have shorter hair you can keep some for another application or root touch up. Apparantly ash based colours dampen down the red tinge but I agree with the others that it's prob your own natural colour that's causing it

While we are on the topic of home dyes for brunettes, I am thinking of switching to an natural dye, does anyone know of any good brands that are more organic/natural hair dye rather than the harsh chemicals that are in most of them. need alternatives please...

I really like the L'Oreal casting creme. It's a semi, but no amonia.
