'Budget' Wedding Venue - Hertfordshire

ShootingStar2012, 6 February, 2013 at 13:06 Posted on Planning 0 22

Hi everyone,

I was hoping to pick your brains please... OH and I were due to go and see a few venues next weekend, and assuming we were never going to be able to afford to buy a house, had settled on a (rough) budget. However, we're now thinking we may be able to buy a little place as well, so the wedding budget has shrunk dramatically. I'll get to the point in a minute ? basically, we were looking at places like Knebworth, St. Michael's Manor etc in Hertfordshire, but are now going down the route of a smaller place, maybe even less 'commercial' in order to get our day a bit cheaper. We've also cut the guestlist slightly.

Does anybody know of any nice 'budget' venues in Hertfordshire (or south Beds)? Maybe a small hotel or nice, pretty pub? We're not that keen on the idea of a register office or a marquee - both lovely but just not really our taste. Our budget is around £4,000 for the venue - including food, evening buffet, drinks, room hire etc. Obviously by the time we've got everything else sorted it'll probably end up still being quite expensive, but felt that was a realistic figure to start with... And looking at about 70-80 guests both day and evening.

Any little tips would be great ? thank you!!

Oh, and I should mention we're going to look round The Watermill in Hemel on Saturday but that's the only one we can find at the moment that seems remotely affordable.

Have you tried the Roebuck hotel in Ware? Not sure of cost but it has several rooms available and may suit your budget.

Thanks everyone! We're now going to see Shenley Cricket Centre on Saturday for a look-round (thanks MrsH2014); seems a bit too good to be true, incredibly reasonable prices and the menu sounds amazing.

Three Lakes is another very possible contender, thank you.

Getting quite excited now, and I'm allowed to fall in love with one of these as they're so much more reasonable than St. Michael's Manor (I cried when we left I liked it so much! ?) haha.

Shenley is lovely, but it's a marquee for larger groups-some aren't keen on this?

There's the Met Police club in Bushey, and when I was looking I googled 'village halls wedding hertfordshire' and there was a really good one price wise near Stevenage but no idea on the name, something like the wadesmill?

    Good luck!

When I viewed shenly the marquee wasn't included in the special price, it was just the actual cricket club where you got married, the marquee was extra (and summer only). They might have changed it though since I went a few months ago. The lady there was really helpful though and will explain all options available. We were originally thinking of hireing a tipi and putting that in the grounds instead of having their marquee and she was absolutely fine with that.

Initially we weren't keen on a marquee either, but from the photos Shenley's one looks quite nice. Tomorrow will tell ? going to check out Wadesmill too, thanks!

I'm another St. Michael's bride and agree with MrsH2014 that the price makes me want to cry! Also if you go for a more budget option, it hopefully will give you more freedom to do your own thing. E.g, I would have liked to have a hog roast or something a bit different for the evening, but St. Michael's are quite rigid in what you can/can't do and wouldn't let us do anything like this. I don't know the details but my friend is basically having a marquee in a random field near Hitchin I think, and they are all camping over, etc, so there are options, but maybe you need to think outside the box a bit.

Well our timings all went out the window unfortunately so we only ended up seeing Shenley - Wadesmill have a wedding fair next Sunday so we're going then. Shenley was nice, ironically the marquee was our favourite part! Both sort of felt we liked it but didn't love it ? which is a shame, I really want to like it but there was no emotional attachment... wasn't keen on the room where you have the ceremony, or the space upstairs (up quite a narrow staircase) for the welcome drinks. So slightly back to the drawing board I think! Really quite frustrating...

Do you need a lisenced venue? I'd google the Herts registry office as they have a list of venues that you could look at. If you are willing to move a bit away from Herts, I think Enfield and Harrow boroughs have the same sort of list.

Have you looked at the Mercure (was Ramada) on the A41 in Bushey? Admittedly not a pretty location but a friend got a really reasonable deal there.

Yeah, it would be for the ceremony and reception. I'll have a look, thanks ? and will check out the hotel in Bushey too, I'm starting to lose track of all the venues I've Googled in the last couple of months but I'm not sure that one rings a bell!

Reasonable is good - as long as we don't actively dislike it I'm sure we can work with it, lol.

    Hiya,

We viewed Shenley Cricket Club and I also attended a wedding (as a bridesmaid) there in October which used the winter marquee. The whole thing is a bargain! Couldn't fault anyone - the staff are ridiculously helpful and everything went perfect!

Another few worth looking at are - Bushey Country Club (bit of a contemporary vibe but I loved it), Fairway Tavern in Welwyn Garden City - they have a marquee lined room and The Airman in South Beds - starlit marquee. They all have pretty good deals on and I think they are all lovely Smiley smile

    Good luck x

Aubrey Park Hotel (used to be Ramada Hemel Hempstead) used to do some good deals but they have recently got new owners and are in the middle of a refurb so not sure what the prices will be like now? They are having a wedding fair this Sunday (24th) which launches their new wedding brochure. Few of my wedding suppliers are attending the fair so I will be going along. May be an idea to attend to have a look (and for the free goodies!!)

Or what about Harpenden House? I think they often do deals if you are willing to have a week day wedding?

Other suggestions; The Sun Hotel in Hitchin, or Old Palace Lodge in Dunstable - these both have indoor reception rooms

    Hope this helps x

Thank you Georgia, we've actually fallen in love with Shendish Manor in Apsley now! Saw it on Sunday and there was nobody to show us round unfortunately but we both just knew as soon as we walked in ? It is slightly over our 'new' budget, but are willing to wait a little longer if it means we can have that venue. Hoping to see it properly and have someone to show us and answer questions in a couple of weeks ?

ShootingStar2012 can I please ask you what the prices were like for Shendish Manor? I came across it online too but couldn't access any pricing which is really annoying! Was it reasonable? We have been looking at venues around £70/£80 pp

    Thanks!

    Xx

If you go to the 'Wedding' section there's a bit where you put in your contact details (so they then have you on their mailing list I assume!) and download the brochure. http://www.shendish-manor.com/home/brochures/wedding-pack/request/request should work. In the brochure they have prices, packages and stuff. It seems to be around £80-90pp depending on the time of year and 2013/2014 but there's also a package for 50 people at £5,500 off-peak which we'll probably go for. Hope you find it all OK. If not private message me and I'll email you the brochure ?

    Hello!

You could check out the Spirella Ballroom in Letchworth: https://www.spirella.com/wedding

It's a nice venue and reasonably priced: when we looked, venue hire was around £1.5k and a 3 course meal was around £30-£50 per person. Corkage and drinks prices were reasonable too.

You could also consider Letchworth Hall Hotel https://all.accor.com/hotel/7243/index.en.shtml#origin=mercure

And don't forget to look at approved venues in Hertfordshire if you haven't already:

    https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/your-community/register/marriages/where/bwedven3y/

    Good luck!
