Buffet ideas - evening and breakfast

sugar&spice2, 1 February, 2009 at 20:45 Posted on Planning 0 7

We are hiring a cottage for our wedding. We plan on serving a ploughmans lunch time buffet, for our 20 guests who are mainly family. We are going to have a buffet in the evening too but I am worried people will feel like they are being offered left overs. So I am not too sure what to serve.

Also the morning after we are inviting our guests to breakfast and I am looking for ideas

Its all self catering and we are not hiring in any caterers so anything that can be prepared before hand is more suitable.

We have access to a large fridge/freezer and aga

Wow, love the idea, how great, nice and intimate and way cheaper than having a venue. Is it a large one where all of your guests can stay too?

So for brekkie you can have

Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on bagels or toasted brioche

Pancakes and bacon with maple syrup

Continental breakfast of danishes, crossiants, fresh fruit etc

So a ploughmans lunch for you lunch time, that's no problem, cheese and pate, bread, pickled onions, tomatoes, celery, apple, chutney maybe a boiled egg or two? You can follow this with your wedding cake and tea/coffee.

For the evening have more of a selection of roasted meats and baked whole salmon, which can be slow cooking in the aga all day with potato salad, rice salad, green salad which can all be prepared the day before. This way with the hot meats, you will be able to provide a bit of hot food during the day. Or go for a BBQ?

Thank you for your suggestions, they were really helpful

I think we will go for

Ploughmans lunch - it can be put on trays the day before and put out in the morning

Still a bit undecided for an evening buffet

Continental breakfast - again all put out on platters and people can help themselves

The house sleeps 10, so both sets of parents are staying and a few others. Its alot cheaper than a wedding venue, especially with being able to self cater and provide your own alcohol.

We also have two children, our youngest will be 15 months, so she can toddle around without us having to worry too much.

Its definately the way forward for budget weddings I think, its cheaper than wedding venues but you still get the wow factor of a beautiful place

My brother had his wedding set in ahuge cottage and it worked so well becasue people had their own space, and it was relaxed but everyone could come together and drink and celebrate and then totter back to their rooms at night. can definitely recommend!

I think your ideas sound lovely but would be wary of preparing lunch so far in advance. It really won't take long for people to cut bread, cheese, open packets of meat and salad and will be so much fresher - delegate organisation to one of the Mum's for lunch, Dad's for dinner and the other Mum for breakfast - they'll be only to happy to help.

For dinner a BBQ or selection of shop bought oven baked pizza & pasta dishes with garlic bread & salad is quick & easy.

Breakfast could be yogurts, fruit, mini packets of cereals, pastries/muffins and a toaster with bread for people to make their own.

I am going to provide bread rolls, so no need to cut up bread on the day and also they will keep better. No packets of meat, its going to be a joint of honey roasted ham.
