Buffet instead of wedding breakfast, how many people?

James, 1 August, 2022 at 10:24 Posted on Planning 0 3
Hi everyone

So we're getting married in October, and we're having a hot buffet rather than a wedding breakfast for the ceremony guests.
I was just wondering how many do you think we all should cater for, and how many options should we have?
We went going to have an extra buffet in the evening either, because it's mainly just the day guests going into the night as it's a later in the day wedding
Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Hi James,

Buffet as the wedding breakfast can work well. Without knowing more details about your day, I would suggest still doing a table plan and getting guests seated for the meal. You could ask your wedding coordinator/venue coordinator or caterer to ask each table up at a time to collect something from the buffet and then sit back down again.

Or you could look to put own posy tables and guests can eat while mingling.

I would definitely cater for the right amount here as it will be main part of your wedding day and everyone will be hungry.

For the evening, people do get peckish so I would suggest having some food. The amount of food you should order would depend on your guests and probably the type of food you are ordering but you can often get away with ordering for less people.

Food is quite a memorable thing for people. If people are hungry they will not enjoy themselves.

    I hope this helps

    With love,

What are your ceremony & buffet times? You say it's later in the day so will your guests have eaten twice already before the ceremony? In this case I think you're right not to do any extra evening food because people only need 3 meals a day. Although I would over cater the hot buffet, if it's the only food, because you don't want it to run out and the last guests get nothing.

A buffet instead of a wedding breakfast can suit almost any number of guests, but it works best for around 50 to 150 people depending on venue size and catering capacity. It offers flexibility, lowers serving costs, and creates a relaxed, social atmosphere for guests.
