Builder Toilet Etiquette! AIBU?!

CarlaM, 17 September, 2008 at 12:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

We have builders in replacing a couple of windows. They stated this morning. I have just found one of them sitting in my ensuite bathroom, muddy work boots & all, reading my OK magazine and having a dump. I only knew he was there because he work up my sleeping 3 month old baby closing the door. AIBU in expecting him to either a) ask before he uses the loo and b) expecting him to use the downstairs toilet? When I said this too him he looked at me like I was quite mad. AIBU?

It's very presumptuous and something most normal people wouldn't do, but did you establish house rules in the first place? I find it far easier to do this when we have people in.

Personally I would expect anyone coming into my house to ask to use the toilet. Its just good manners, especially someone who is doing work on your house.

I also find it odd that he went to the en suite, unless of course the downstairs loo isn't that obvious.

No, I must admit that I failed to set any rules when they arrived as I was busy with the children. I guess I should have taken the time but I always assumed people would ask. If I'd have found him downstairs in that loo I wouldn't be that upset ...... although having a sh1t in someone elses house is something I generally try to avoid doing myself!

Yep! I knocked because I thought it was odd the door was pushed up and the baby was crying but I thought he might have wandered into the bedorom by mistake and retreated when he set the baby off. There was no answer to my knock so I pushed the door open. Ugh!

So not funny! This comes just days after I went into the bedroom to put the baby in her cot, looked up because I heard water running and got a full on frontal of my H's best friend in the shower as he'd not bothered to close the bathroom door! Double ugh!

Sorry as much as it is totally out of order what they did, I can't help having a giggle. It could have been worse though - you might have walked in and he was having a hand shandy over the page 3 girl or something.....

But I would not be happy myself in your situation I must admit. Usually when we have stuff done round the house I just say there's the kettle and there's the loo and help yourself and I'm working upstairs if you need me. But to find an ensuite is quite a way off course I would say.

My dads guys always ask (if theres someone around) and they know to open a window and whistle if there isn't a lock, they usually use the downstairs though, maybe he found that one occupied

I'd be furious that he'd felt it ok to wander into my bedroom trying to find a loo. I'd be asking him to use the downstairs one in the future.

However, some of the comments on here are hilarious

I wouldn't find this funny either. I'd be absolutely furious and would certainly say something. I would expect them to ask to use the loo but wouldn't be annoyed if they just went and used the downstairs loo. The ensuite is another thing though as he went through your bedroom to get to it. Did he know that it was there or was he wandering around your house looking in every room?

I've kicked a bloke off a site before for peeing behind some rubble in the back garden when there was a working toilet inside. So God knows what I would have done if I walked into your ensuite to find that. Probably told the foreman to send him home and that I don't want him working for me again. It shows a total lack of respect for the homeowner and I don't think that's on.

I've been working with builders for a few years now and my current lot are very courteous and respectful and I wouldn't have them working for me if they weren't.
