Buying Diamond rings abroad - advice please!

bigmomma, 24 June, 2008 at 22:51 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi we're currently looking around at engagement rings and I'd really like to have one made from a design I have and I am considering going to the US to buy it.

Has anyone you know done this and do you have any tips?

Thanks

Unless you're going to the US to buy the ring in person and bring it home without customs knowing, you'll be stung for tax when it's sent to you!

Yeah...would recommend wearing the ring back and disposing of the box etc so you don't get caught by customs and charged tax!

I bought mine whilst on holiday in turkey. It the same as this one from Ernest Jones

I made a huge saving, over there i paid about £250 and this in Ernest jones was over £700!!

I wore the ring home on my finger so that people at the airport thought it was just a normal ring that i wore every day and didn't get stuck with paying loads of tax at the airport.

I think if you're going abroad anyway you might as well get them whilst you're there, there is huge savings to be made.

I got mine in Antwerp as it's the diamond centre of Europe. The savings were huge, infact the difference in price paid for flights, 3 nights in the Hilton and spending money.

    Hi bigmomma,

I got mine from New York in the diamond district, my ring is princess cut with a platinum band but we saved loads. A couple of my friends have paid roughly the same amount over here and my diamond is twice the size (dont mean that in a big headed way!). I am really pleased we got it abroad. You will have to barter (?) them down on price though as they start off high but because of the high competition you can really get a good bargain, we got my diamond half price! x

We got our wedding rings in Tiffanys in the US and simply down to the exchange rate got them for a fraction of what we'd have paid in London for the same....

We bought mine in the diamond district in New York. We picked a stone, picked a setting and then made it up for us in their workshop.

On the way home I started to panic that I had been sold a piece of glass although it was a certified stone. We took it to Hatton Garden to get it valued. The jeweller was impressed with the quality of the stone and the ring is worth the same number in pounds that we paid in dollars - so a huge bargain.
