Buying Wedding Dress: Did you make an event out of it?

Abbie, 8 January, 2021 at 00:18 Posted on Planning 0 6
After a Google search to find which style of dress I like, I fell in love with a dress online which I couldn't get out of my mind. They didn't have my size, so I decided to wait to see if my size came in stock, and also to view in person and go to the store to try on, thinking I'd invite my best friend and Mum, drink champers.... make an event out of it.

I decided, due to gut feeling, and my size coming back in stock, to order the dress I found online as I couldn't get it out of my head. Also due to COVID I didn't want to risk waiting to view in-store, and the dress to go out of stock.
It arrived and fits like a glove, it's perfect. Feeling very flukey. Although I felt a little sad trying it on alone, maybe because I haven't seen friends and family due to COVID, since I got engaged, I'm wishing they were a part of these moments. Part of me feels like maybe I missed out on part of the wedding experience by not going dress shopping in person and making an event out of it.
I'm wondering if I could invite my best friend and Mum to my home once lockdown in the UK has lifted and do a bit of a reveal... is this unnecessary and a little.... OTT?
I'm interested to know if anyone else has felt similar when buying online, or if you didn't make an event out of buying a dress BC of Covid or other reasons?
Perhaps I've watched too much Don't Tell the Bride and I'm getting wrapped up in what's expected ?
Sending love to anyone planning during this rubbish and unpredictable time ?

I think what you want to do sounds like such a lovely idea!

Covid has taken so much from people, but spending special times with family and friends is one of them.

I think having a glass of bubbly at home and having a reveal of your dress is such a lovely way to include them as well, which I think they will really enjoy.

Thank you for your reply, that made me smile. It's reassuring to know this isn't a 'silly idea' as I keep thinking ?

I am making my dress, and was also a bit sad to miss out on the experience. I have had a couple of people round separately (bridesmaid and fiancé’s mum) to see the fabric and my work so far (tried on the toile or mock-up for them) with a glass of fizz which was lovely. Assuming restrictions ease, I would love to have a little group round for the final fitting. Plus I am making my bridesmaids’ outfits so hope to make a little at home event for measuring/fitting them etc. Not silly at all to have a “try on” at home.

I LOVE that you are making your dress, that is so special and also, hugely jealous of your creativity! I'm wishing you loads of luck for your big day, and I hope that Covid packs its bags soon enough so you can have your fitting with your loved ones X

At the end of the day, finding the dress you love that makes you feel amazing is the ultimate goal.. no matter how you go about it!

I think inviting your best friend and your mum to your house when everything has settled down sounds like such a lovely idea (and so much less stressful than dress shopping!!). Get some champers in, some nice food and have lots of good wedding talk! x

Nothing silly about it - it's a lovely idea and a great way of making your mum and best friend feel involved.

BTW, I ordered my dress online and no one saw it until our wedding day as restrictions didn't lift until just beforehand. So I never got the moment trying it on with loved ones either, but it really didn't matter - when you get married, you're not going to be thinking about missing out on those things, just about how happy you are to finally get married!
